As a music historian, I have looked at his work over the years. They had him doing Pop songs…and many were pretty good. However, Jimmy’s role as Vic Fontaine on Star Trek Deep Space Nine revealed what a great singer he was.
They were looking for a Vegas rat pack act for the holodeck. Jimmy took on that role and his performances led to the recording of 1999’s “This One’s From the Heart”. He sounded much like Sinatra...but even better!! Jimmy had a unique vocal profile....a rich high baritone that had a lush sweetness. Just gorgeous!!
I personally feel he also did the LP to honor the memory of his good friend, Frank Sinatra, who died in 1998. Jimmy should have been marketed as a young Sinatra from the beginning…such was his talent. I’m quite sure Sinatra would have loved to tour with his handsome young friend.
