Several years ago, I read that there was a movement in the immediate post-Revolutionary War era among officers who served under Washington in the Continental Army, to make him a dictator.   Thankfully, Washington did not harbor any dictatorial ambitions.     At Fraunces Tavern in New York City on December 4, 1783,   "George Washington cemented his role as a champion of republicanism by bidding an emotional farewell to his officers, effectively refusing the temptation of absolute power or a military dictatorship. Instead of using his adored army to seize control of the new nation — a common outcome for victorious generals in history — he chose to resign his commission."    Thereupon he returned to private life as a civilian at his estate at Mount Vernon.

I enjoyed this episode so very much. Thank you. 🇺🇸
