As a former Seafordian (now living in NZ) it's always nice to see my sleepy home town get a mention on the internet. You summed up Newhaven so well. Hope the uni results go well for you.

Really liked the video. I've just retired back to Sussex after 50 years working in London. I recently visited Lewes to try to walk some of the old line that used to go to Uckfield that my parents took me to over 55 years ago. Some lovely countryside in the Hamsey area.

The line has just the right amount of remote and bleak, intermixed with the charming and neat. I would also say, a brooding atmosphere, with the continent across the way, the coastal defences and the history going back 1000+ years. Windy? Definitely! A good storm would certainly create atmosphere here...

Now, is it SEE FORD or SEE FUDD? I'm Newhaven born and bred and have lived here for almost 70 years, and I've always said SEE FUDD, but many Seafordians prefer the 'posh' version! Years ago there was a recorded announcement at Lewes that went something like "Platform 3, New'aven'nSeaFORD train." with a lift and a heavy accent on 'Ford'! I've used all those stations, even Newhaven Marine, which had an early morning service that was non-stop to London, stopping at Olympia. Great for when I was working at exhibitions there!

The decline of Newhaven Marine, or Newhaven Continental as it was once known, had already started in the late 1950s. The 'boat trains' from London would stop there, of course, with passengers able to walk almost straight onto the passenger steamers to Dieppe. But numbers were declining rapidly and the start of the car ferry service in 1964 meant even fewer foor passengers. A new passenger terminal and station were built in 1973/74 but as you showed, that's gone. Once the ferry service closed in 1998, that was pretty much it. When the service restarted a few years later the terminal near Newhaven Town station became the only terminal, with passengers being taken to the ship by bus.
