If you fish cold weather and cold water, a dry suit is not optional unless you want to die. Simple as that.  "I did it a thousand times, no problem"....yup, until trip #1051 when a wake from some A-hole not paying attention tosses you into the drink and you freeze up from cold water and die.  I fish the Pacific in the PacNW, 90% of the year it is mandatory.  Even in the warmest months a wet suit is just smart.

Big water of any variety, the VHF is a really good idea.  And the further you get from population, the better idea it becomes.  In the ocean it is mandatory, with GPS squawk an incredibly good idea.  I have considered a PLB, and it's NOT a bad idea and I might yet do it.  I only tend to go off shore 5 or 6 miles at most, but current is a thing...something could happen and I could be a LONG way from land very quickly.  Make it very hard for USCG or local EMS to find you.  A very big lake with a lot of current could put you in the same situation.

This whole past Summer I got more lost/dead kayaker hits in the news feed than I ever have before.  Even considering algorithm, I am just one guy doom scrolling. How many more never hit the news feed?  Yer wife, kids, family, friends don't want to bury you because you just couldn't be bothered to take some safety steps.  Not fair to them.

I'll be honest, rivers scare me somewhat. I would greatly appreciate a video from you guys on how to research water flows and dam locations, as well as how to tell which types of dams are dangerous via those or other methods.

I do a checklist. So many times I’ve gotten to my spot & realize I forgot something. Call it complacency or whatever. But it sucks. A quick list can save you a lot of headaches & only takes a coupla minutes.

I recommend checking local boating regulations for the nav lights.  In many areas a kayak requires the 360 round light and specifically does not permit nav lights unless you're motorized.

Also personalize your first aid kit. Like add allergy meds.

Can you share the full link to that video of you guys getting in the river by that dam? That looked super sketchy and I want to see how you conquered it.

Have you guys seen the dhukr tools ?   I think it was an icast release.  It's to remove hooks from humans (not fish).  I bought two of them and hope I never have to use it but it could mean the difference of going home or just putting on a band aid and continue fishing.
