That's not a bad wood, it seems a lot better than pine and the wood grain is beautiful. Tear-out can be caused by cutting into the wood in the wrong direction which causes the blade to get under the grain. Try your knife in the opposite direction whenever that happens to see if it cuts better.

Man, the look and action on this lure is fantastic!!! You nailed the sink rate and the proportions between the front and rear sections to get that good on an action. Probably one of my favorite builds of yours so far!
