Look at that glorious purple PCB

44:51 For the curious, the iGPU of the SiS chipset this uses does apparently do 3D acceleration, but the Linux SiS driver never implemented 3D support for any SiS GPU. So this is likely an OpenGL fallback software renderer, which unsurprisingly performs horribly.

You talking about the stingyness on Fry returns reminded me one of the coolest things that happened to me at Best Buy.  I was looking for a new joystick and went there to look around.  I forget the model, but found a cool Logitech one that caught my eye, however, there was not one out on display for me to try out, to see how well it felt.  I grabbed a clerks attention and asked him if he could open it up, so I can check it out...he say he could.  He opened it and I checked it out and decided to get one.  I told him that I would take the opened box one, as I knew it was still very new.  He told me to stay there for a moment and ran to the employee pedestal thing and grabbed a piece of paper out of the drawer.  He pulled a sharpie out of is pocket and wrote on piece of paper and stuck it to the box....he put an open box label on it, taking 20% off the cost.  That was cool.

Great video, I actually worked at a Fry's Electronics (socal) and FYI, the orange sticker in the side means that's a "Returned item"

The FCC ID on the keyboard points to "Behavior Tech Computer Corporation" as the original manufacturer. Remember, always look up the FCC ID if you don't see a manufacturer's name!

I personally have no issue with replacing very, very old power supplies. You're saving yourself a whole bunch of heartache right there.

I apologize to anyone who I sold one of those PCs to in 2003-2004.  I once sold sold 10 in one week (great commission on those) but then had all of them returned in the next 2 weeks due to quality issues. I then owed money on my paycheck.  Fry's treated its employees horribly.  The ones I sold in 2003 to 2004 were ECS parts which all suffered from the bad capacitor problems back then.

Circa the same era, Micro Center started selling their cheapest "PowerSpec"-branded whitebox with Linspire. It was UNIVERSALLY purchased to install pirated copies of Windows on it. I was running the service department at one of their stores and was terrified of the tech support nightmare, but we never got a single request. No one used it. Everyone just installed Windows or actual Linux.

That “Native AIM client” has the exact same UI as GAIM/Pidign just with redone assets, so it’s probably just rebranded Pidgin. That’s why there’s a section for “Protocol” in the Accounts window. Great video btw!

Fry's reselling returned items (without checking that it was intact / operational / complete) was pretty notorious. I was always on the lookout for that.

I enjoy new-old-stock unboxing, it's like a time capsule!

As a daily Linux user for home and work since the early 2000's (Gentoo) your channels Linux focus feels like home.

Always love a good trip down memory lane. Great Find!

I haven't heard the Great Quality PC branding since I was a kid, my parents had gotten me one as well from Fry's Electronics and it had a Hong Kong version of Fedora on it called Thiz Linux, what I great find!

A computer with a such a story personal is always a exciting computer

This was a really fun video, I always enjoy your regular content but this was a nice change of pace something nice and relaxed.

No big project to worry about or irreplaceable components to worry about damaging

I like how the audio is overdriven right out of the box

When I lived in San Francisco for 15 years (working as a database programming contractor) I would make the drive down to the Santa Clara Frye's about once a month on 280.  One of the prettiest freeways in the country, and then the reward was walking the Frye's aisles looking for bargains.  Like a kid (40 years old though) in a candy store.  Great times!  But always there is change, and I learned not to be afraid of change, but to embrace it...

Installer: "Where is your sound card? [/dev/]"
TT: "Um... in the computer?"
😂

This was enjoyable to watch. Thank you!

Sounds like the tutorial voice was recorded with a 90's desktop PC electret mic. Lol. Reminds me of the good old days of discovering the audio recorder in win95.
