A programme to commemorate the Battle of Britain, told through the technology, the heroes of the time and the spirit and determination of the British people.

2010 marks the anniversary of the Battle of Britain – this film marks this important occasion, paying tribute to all those who ended Nazi intentions of gaining control of the British skies prior to landing some 30,000 troops on the shores of southern England.

13 Hours That Saved Britain explores the events of a single day, 15th September 1940 – the day Churchill described as the ‘crux of the battle’, a day that is now celebrated as Battle of Britain Day. Dramatic colour film footage of aerial combat combined with contemporary interviews will illustrate that the events of seventy years ago still resonate with a new generation.

The documentary is a gripping and powerful account of the pilots of Fighter Command who defended Britain in the summer of 1940 and the strong arm behind the shield, a nation united to defend its freedom and pave the way for the eventual victory.

Amazing documentary! My uncle F/O Oswald St. John Pigg was a fighter pilot in 72 Squadron and killed in action on September 1st 1940, shot down by a Messerschmitt 109 over Elvey Farm in Kent. He was just 22 years old. I did not know him, R.I.P. Never have so many owed so much to so few. . .

The people of UK are very grateful to the Polish and Commonwealth pilots who played a major part in Battle of Britain...

We can never really thank that great generation that fought for and gave us freedom with many paying the ultimate price. May God bless them all.

When I was a child, in the early '60's, I discovered the library books which where full of pictures and detailed the "Battle of Britian". I am of English descent, my Great-Great-Grandfather having imigrated from England. I was completely taken with the bravery of those WWII pilots detailed in those books, and they did not leave out the ground crews nor the citizens in that epic battle. The defense of Britian in WWII is one of the great epics of the 20th century. I am proud of my heritage.

They didn't just save their fellow countrymen's lives, they granted freedom to all of us.

My grandfather flew a Hurricane. He never told me the story himself. One day over kent he fired at a bomber, and when he pulled away he saw there was a Messerschmitt Bf 109 right ahead of him so he opened fire. While flying away he saw the 109 was on fire, he could see into the cockpit. The 109 pilot turned to him and saluted just before he went down into a field and burst into flames. I was told what happened that day was the reason Grandad never spoke about the war. I loved spending time with him and his old Alfa Romeo. He passed when I was 9 and i cried when I saw his medals. I learned a lot when ww2 Luftwaffe pilots came to his funeral. May they all rest in peace.

I was six or seven when the film came out. We travelled to another town to see it. We had to stand in a queue two sides round the block for hours. A kid came out bawling and his mother screamed at everyone that it was too scary and we should be ashamed of ourselves. We laughed it off. Everyone was in such high spirits. I remember when we finally got inside, the bullets tearing through the airframes sounded real and I kept flinching. You had to feel for those poor sods in the Heinkels. At one point you were looking out the nose of one of them through the gunsights at a rolling Spitfire. I felt an unforgettable, visceral gut pain at the critical moment where it looked a goner, but somehow it escaped by a hair's breadth and weaved away. The screen was so big (to me) that it really felt like I was up there in thin air.

I was born in 1938 and although very young at the start of the war, I can remember most of the dog fights over Kent. As I grew older most of my time was spend either in the Anderson shelter or in the Morrison shelter, one in our dining room the other outside in the back garden. Later at school we were almost always in shelters for our lessons. Never forget it. Dad was in the RASC.

the switch from air war to city bombing was hitler's ultimate disaster

Very well done. Injection of scenes from the movie were very tastefully done. The narration was clear and concise. Thanks.

There are no words really to express the gratitude we all have for this generation whatever they did in the War.

Let us not forget the 145 Polish pilots, 302 and 303 squadron, who accounted for more than 10% of German losses in the Battle of Britain, being at that point more experienced than British airmen. Great guys.

My ancester was a Captain on a Lancaster. He flew 13 missions when his Lancaster was hit by a German night fighter. He was the only survivor. He was very impressed with the pilots of fighter command.

Both my Dad and Mum were teenagers during this battle that was happening above their heads. I am so glad I got them to record their memoirs of this and life in general at that time. My Grandad was a shift foreman at Battersea Power Station during the war. They were certainly challenged during those times.

This is one of the best Documentaries I've ever seen. I watch WW2 almost Daily as I find it fascinating from every viewpoint from the War. Long Live Britain 🇬🇧

Most of this visual is from the film “The Battle Of Britain.” This was probably the largest assembly of German and British aircraft since the war. As a bit of trivia all the German aircraft were leased from Spain.
