The Regge River – Netherlands | August 2026
Location: Regge River, Twente, Netherlands
Start: Pelmolen, Rijssen — a uniquely Dutch put-in beside a historic windmill, with a small parking area.
Finish: Wilgenweard, Nijverdal — take-out on river left, with a large parking area.
Distance: Originally planned as 15 km, but shortened to Wilgenweard due to the challenging conditions on the river.
During the extreme drought of summer 2026, almost no rivers in the Netherlands had enough water for paddling. The Regge was a surprising exception:
Water levels are maintained partly by water supplied from the nearby Twente Canal.
Due to the drought, farmers were not allowed to use surface water.
Several dams in the Regge help maintain the water level.
Reeds were being cut along the riverbanks and thrown into the water to be collected downstream.
The result was a green sea of floating reeds that became an unexpected challenge.
A very different kind of river adventure!
Cold-Soak recipe – 1 Person
Fill empty peanut butter jar with:
6 tbsp couscous
Dried tomatoes, chopped
Raisins
Jerky of your choice
Crushed nuts
1 sachet vegetable soup seasoning
2 tsp curry powder
Optional: dried vegetables
Water til covered
Shake well
Let it soak for 1½–2 hours and it’s ready.
Fresh, filling and surprisingly tasty!
