African Biographics

This is the story of Malawi’s Dr Hastings Kamuzu Banda, who was one of the more enigmatic “Big Men” of the post-independence era in Africa. Banda has been described as one of the most extraordinary people of the 20th century. He lived three different lives; first as a peasant, a medical doctor and essentially the king of Malawi.

Same problem as Mao, he lived to long. If he had died before the Cabinet crisis he would have been remembered as an expert political operator who won Malawi Independence and improved the development of the state.

I lived in Malawi from 2016-2020. I miss that country. The culture, the people, the vibes, I miss all of it and plan on going back one day. All that said, Kamuza, like Mugabe, is a very dividing/polarizing politician. On the one hand he helped the country obtain independence and it first, looked like the country was on the right path. However it soon turned into a dictatorship. Till this day is image is everywhere from currency to gov offices to chitenjes (cloth). The people seemed to appreciate him helping the country achieve independence but at the same time they condemn him for his brutal rule over the country.

As a Malawian, he's a polarizing figure, but his journey from humble beginnings in Kasungu to Life President is facinating

As a Malawian, it's great to learn such history to appreciate how far we've come politically

Yeah I heard of him from my father. He was a friend of my father during his days in Kumasi Ghana and he was at my naming ceremony when I was born in Kumasi, and am told he was very popular among his friends those days and was still in contact with my father till my father died

Thank you for calling “life President,” for what it is, an unlimited dictator.

I visited Malawi in the 1980 s on a company incentive trip from South Africa! Found it to be a magnificent country and wonderful warm people! Our team including wives, travelled from Lelongwe airport to a venue on lake Malawi! Wow! Eye opening! We no.ted a land of plenty! Farming was evident everywhere along the route, even though very rudementary, everyone had food! In fact that year Malawi donated food via the United Nations to Mozambique, as they were experiencing huge problems after their independence from Portugal! It was a most amazing visit !

Great content, Tatenda. Banda, just like many leaders of Post Independent Africa, took a false step- to put it bluntly, betrayed his people- by forming a one-party dictatorship in the name of fostering national unity which later made him drunk on power. But he tried in other areas: The quality of education and healthcare was far much better than today, cities and towns were clean, and there was a good level of discipline and order, although this was accompanied by massive human rights violations. All things considered, Kamuzu will forever remain a divisive figure.

Malawi is essentially a lake with a country on the shore. Lakeside. Very interesting geography which is unique really.

Malawian here, Kamuzu might be a polarizing figure but he was just a product of his time. The zeitgeist after independence were about euphoria and then coups and violence. Every leader then was paranoid about getting overthrown. Somehow I think he did good being hard on people too. Imagine if we had gotten democracy that people clamor for in the 60`s or 70s. I can guarantee that nothing tangible would have been built or done.

Nothing about the IMF is unintentional, Mr.Banda was a name I used to hear ringing in my ears when I growing up,but never really went deeper into learning about the man...thanks for this content
