In this first episode of While I’m Here, I paint a 22" × 30" seascape from life at Beavertail State Park in Rhode Island.
The painting is done entirely in one session, in about two hours, on Arches oil paper. Rather than trying to make a static image of the scene, I was interested in the movement of the water, the changing light, and the feeling of being there while everything is constantly shifting.
The painting is loose and expressive, but I still want the sky, sea, and rocks to feel like themselves. I’m interested in how far I can push a painting away from a literal description of a place without losing the experience of being there.
The video begins with a little conversation before I start, then moves into a voiceover while I work, followed by a bit of conversation at the end. What you're seeing is a condensed version of the most interesting moments from the two-hour painting session, rather than a sped-up time-lapse.
While I’m Here is an ongoing series about painting from observation, being in a particular place, and seeing what happens when I give myself enough time to respond to it.
