In this video, Wing Cdr MS Grewal narrates the fascinating story of three Indian Air force officers including him escaping from custody as a prisoner of war in Pakistan. They travelled up to the bus stand on the border between Pak and Afghanistan. It is a story of courage, confidence, risks and surprise.
Wing Commander MS Grewal was commissioned into the Fighter Pilot stream of the Indian Air Force on 28th October 1963. He hailed from the 85th course. While serving with 32 Squadron during the 1971 War, his aircraft was fired upon by the air defence guns while on a combat mission in Pakistan. He ejected and was captured and remained a prisoner in Pakistan till the Shimla accord between India and Pakistan. During his internment he made a brave and courageous but unsuccessful attempt to escape. He was later awarded the Vir Chakra.The citation read as below.
'During the operations against Pakistan in December, 1971, Flight Lieutenant Melvinder Singh Grewal served with a Fighter-Bomber Squadron in the Western Sector. On 4th December, 1971, he was detailed as a member of a four aircraft strike mission over the enemy airfield ‘Shorkot Road’. He successfully carried out the mission destroying one aircraft on ground and damaging a building. The same day, in the evening, he carried out another strike mission. As a member of a formation over the same airfield, he pressed the attack despite heavy Anti-Aircraft fire. However, in this attack his aircraft was hit by ground fire and crashed'.
