The Battle of Chawinda, fought during the 1965 India-Pakistan War, remains one of the largest tank battles after World War II. This historic military clash unfolded near the town of Chawinda in Pakistan's Sialkot sector, where Indian forces launched Operation Nepal, aiming to capture strategic points like the Marala-Ravi Link Canal and disrupt Pakistan’s communication lines via the Grand Trunk Road. India’s elite 1st Armored Division, equipped with advanced British-made Centurion Mk.7 tanks, clashed with Pakistan’s 6th Armored Division, armed with M47 and M48 Patton tanks. Despite India’s technological advantage, Pakistan’s fast-response tactics, superior maneuverability, and effective air support turned the tide of battle.

On September 14, 1965, Indian forces launched a full-scale offensive to encircle and overrun Chawinda from three directions. However, fierce resistance from Pakistani forces led by Brigadier Abdul Ali Malik and decisive airstrikes by F-86 Sabres halted the Indian advance. The destruction of Indian tanks, the death of decorated officer Lt. Col. A. B. Tarapore, and Pakistan’s counterattack forced Indian units to retreat. The Battle of Chawinda became the turning point of the 1965 war, cementing its place in military history as a testament to strategic defense, heroic leadership, and armored warfare on a massive scale.
