New Orleans becomes purgatory to the young man who made bad choices in life. "To wear, that Ball and Chain".   Thanks for the great reaction.

If you like 5FDP, you have a whole amazing world of music waiting for you.

Awesome video

I took a New Orleans tour a long while back and they take you past the House of the Rising Sun.  It was more than a gambling house, it was primarily a bordello.  Unfortunate story, when they arranged this, they couldn’t copyright it as a composition, since it was an old traditional folk song, but they couldn’t copyright the arrangement.  They all added to it, but there was a limit as to how many names could be associated with the copyright, so keyboardist Alan Price put his name on it.  He collected millions on royalties and did not split them with the bandmates as he had agreed to do.  Instead, he left the band and started another one.  He wrote the soundtrack for the movie “O’ Lucky Man” and I think he appeared in it as well.  The bassist, Chas Chandler, found a new upcoming guitarist named Jimi Hendrix when he visited England, put together the Jimi Hendrix Experience band and served as their manager until Electric Ladyland.

As others have pointed out, this is an old folk song. As far as I know the Animals were the first to do it in 6/8 time instead of the normal 4/4 or 3/4 time.

Great reaction! Thorough, thoughtful, and the ending made me LOL

This was recorded in one take. I've seen Eric many times. Whadda voice. Met Hilton (guitar) many times at a mutual friends record shop. He was a really nice down-to-Earth kinda guy. The bassist discovered Jimi Hendrix.

As another commenter has said, “House of the Rising Sun” is a centuries old folk song. You are right, Eric Burden and the Animals’ version is remarkable. Another rendition I think you would appreciate is that of Joan Baez, done a few years before the Animals. It’s from the perspective of a woman lured into a life of “sin and misery”, made all the more moving by the fact that Joan is one of the greatest singers ever.

Hi Kyra,Great review, I grew  up in Late 501s and the 60`s, loved the music then. One thing not mentioned yet was keyboard player is Alan Price who formed his own band called The Alan Price Set, perhaps check them out sometime.

Hi Kyra!
The Animals were part of the "British Invasion" era of Rock and Roll, when bands still wore matching outfits.  You will see that in early Beatles videos too.
This video was recorded over a studio audio, and they are just miming the singing.  If you look closely, the electric guitars are not even plugged in, and the keyboard magically moves from the back to front of the set without stopping playing.  Also there are no microphones visible.
The slow walk around the set mimics old funeral parades in New Orleans, where the coffin would ride in a horse-drawn wagon, followed by musicians and the mourners.  We still do such parades today here in the Atlanta area, but they use a hearse followed by automobiles when the church for the funeral service and the cemetary are far apart.  Police stop all all other traffic as respect for the deceased.
The "Ball and Chain" has a couple of meanings.  The "House of the Rising Sun" is supposed to be a whorehouse and gambling place (prostitution is the sin part of "sin and misery", and losing all your money is the misery part).  "Ball and Chain" was a common description of a spouse, in the sense you were tied to them.  Perhaps he got one of the whores pregnant and now has to marry them.  A literal ball and chain were used on prisoners to prevent them from running away.  So perhaps he went broke or committed a crime, and is now forced to go back to New Orleans to pay for what he did.

THE GUITARIST SMILING WAS PUT OFF AS THE ORGANIST ALAN PRICE WAS MOVING HIS ORGAN TO FRONT AND I RECON ALAN WAS STRUGGLING TO GET IN POSITION FOR LAST SHOT

Apparently "House of the Rising Sun" is a traditional folk song of unknown authorship. The song stems from traditional folk and blues music, with thematic similarities to 16th-century English ballads like "The Unfortunate Rake". "House of the Rising Sun" was said to have been known by American miners in 1905. The earliest known printed lyrics appeared in 1925 in Adventure Magazine, collected by Robert Winslow Gordon. Appalachian artists Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Gwen Foster recorded it as "Rising Sun Blues" on September 6, 1933. Ashley stated he learned it from his grandfather. Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, Woody Guthrie, and Dolly Parton all recorded popular interpretations before and after The Animals.

The House of the Rising Sun is a traditional folk song that likely originated in the 1930s.
