In July 1945, during USS Barb’s final combat patrol, Commander Eugene Fluckey and his crew attempted one of the most unusual submarine operations of World War II: attacking a railway on Japanese-controlled Karafuto. After observing the coastal train line for days, an eight-man landing party went ashore at night carrying a 55-pound explosive charge and a pressure-triggered device designed to let the locomotive detonate the bomb itself. The mission forced American submariners to cross dark coastal waters, move through unfamiliar terrain, plant the explosives beneath the tracks, survive the sudden arrival of another train, and escape in rubber boats before the target locomotive reached the trap. This documentary reconstructs how USS Barb turned a submarine patrol into a daring land sabotage mission-and brought the entire landing party back safely.
