More than once I’ve had tears rolling down my face listening to Dr. John discussing human nature - existential fear of death, or shame, or the innocence of childhood - with wisdom and extraordinary empathy. I sobbed for a long time during/after he read the piece he wrote on Michael "Monkey" Vaughan.
And he was the first to identify that Gabby Petito was the real victim of abuse when the Moab police footage was released—everyone else, including the police, interpreted the dynamic all wrong and had it entirely backwards. But based on nothing more than the bodycam, Dr. John understood right away what was going on - with preternaturally perfect accuracy. He didn’t even hesitate in offering an analysis that differed from everyone else, and he was not only 100% correct but also unbelievably prescient too: he anticipated details that had not come out yet because they’d not even been discovered yet in the investigation. But he knew.
And Lauren, thank you for bringing Dr. John to us, and for sharing him with us, as well as a huge thank you so much for all of the excellent (and HARD!) work you do covering these cases - not just researching what others have reported, but full-on intrepid investigating and digging into leads yourself (ahead of even the NYT - I remember you uncovered the “visual snow” posts and I’m still upset the NYT took the story without properly attributing it to you!!).
I am so grateful for the countless hours, days, weeks (!!) at a time that you’ve spent taking detailed notes to report back from courtrooms where no devices are allowed. We wouldn’t know what happened in full if not for you Lauren. And there is no one I trust more to diligently report - to capture, to notice! - everything and to share it all with us, with the wisdom and extraordinary empathy you always bring to these cases as well.
Thank you both SO much for everything you do, it really is a public service.
