Hello guys, and welcome back! So something crashed into a lighthouse, and then, three years later, there was a strange shimmering dome that swallowed miles of coastline, and almost nobody, nobody who enters it ever comes back out. This is the Shimmer, the central mystery of Alex Garland’s Annihilation, which is an expanding anomaly that doesn’t simply kill things, but also changes them. Animals, plants, DNA, even human identities can be reflected, duplicated and fundamentally rewritten inside it. But the fun fact is, the movie only shows us part of what’s happening. The novel goes somewhere far stranger. So today, we’ll be dissecting exactly what the Shimmer is, how it works and what it creates and the terrifying mystery waiting beneath the lighthouse. So hope you got your seatbelts on!

Ventriss is destroyed at the end because the shimmer finds out she has cancer, and does not want to duplicate that as its kind of the same thing but a negative. So it just disintegrates itself and then uses Natalie Portman's blood to create a copy of her like it did with Kane.
And the Shimmer doesn't just make copies, it changes things. So Natalie isnt the shimmer, its got the shimmer inside of her while her husband Kane IS the shimmer.
Saul and his story and transformation is true horror
