Escaping the Outback & Our First Roadside Repair in 60,000km | S7 EP35
We wake inside our tent beside the Great Central Road, unsure whether the overnight rain has destroyed our only route out of the Australian Outback.
Fortunately, the worst of the storm missed us—but we still have to reach Laverton before the road closes again. We pack our emergency camp, load the BMW R1300 GSA and continue west through deep mud, standing water and rapidly changing Great Central Road conditions.
The track gets worse before it gets better. We pass road trains that have been stuck in the mud for days, but our Metzeler Karoo 4 tyres keep finding grip and somehow carry our fully loaded, two-up adventure motorcycle through.
Eventually, we reach Laverton—and the coffee waiting for us feels like the greatest reward imaginable. We soon discover that we made the right decision to keep moving: the Great Central Road closes shortly after we escape.
With our epic Uluru-to-Laverton Outback crossing finally complete, we turn towards Kalgoorlie-Boulder. Then, after more than 60,000 kilometres around the world without needing a roadside repair, the gear shifter on our BMW R1300 GSA comes loose.

That was some riding accomplished in last few days, have to say!! Kudos to Sean for handling a fully laden Storm brilliantly & for Em's constant reassurances & assistance during the tough portions of the outback. Indeed, very lucky to have made it out just before the closure of the road. You had us all on edge too, here in the comfort of our homes. 3 of you will be sort of "legends" now!! Tnx for sharing.
