Released in 1991, Dark Sun was unlike anything Dungeons & Dragons players had seen before. Set on the dying world of Athas, it replaced heroic fantasy with desperate survival, powerful psionics, defiler magic, gladiatorial arenas, and a world where water was more valuable than gold.

EL PRESIDENTE
This is my dad's recipe that he used for the barrel-aged version I drank in the video. To make a fresh one:

➡️1.5 oz White Rum (my dad used an aged Havana Club, however)
➡️0.75 oz Dry Vermouth (Dolin)
➡️0.25 oz Orange Curaçao
➡️2 dashes Grenadine
➡️Garnish: Lemon Peel

To Make:
1️⃣Add ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir until well-chilled
2️⃣Strain into a stemmed cocktail glass
3️⃣Express lemon peel over the drink and rub around the rim of the glass, then drop into the glass

Homemade Grenadine:
➡️2 cups pomegranate juice (either fresh, from about 2 pomegranates, or bottled)
➡️2 cups granulated sugar
➡️2 oz pomegranate molasses
➡️1 tsp orange blossom water

1️⃣Heat the pomegranate juice until very warm
2️⃣Add the sugar and stir until dissolved
3️⃣Add the pomegranate molasses and orange blossom water; stir until incorporated
4️⃣Allow to cool, then strain into a bottle. Keep refrigerated and use in 1 month.

My group quickly moved to Dark Sun exclusively after we started playing D&D in high school. It was so common to run the game that we stopped calling it "D&D" altogether - we played Dark Sun. I defend 2e from grognards and noobs on social media "edition wars posts" because for me and my group, together for over 30 years now, this is the most amazing version of D&D so 2e by proxy is my favorite edition.

As a DM who enjoyed exploring the limits of what a party could endure, Dark Sun was one of my favorite settings. We rarely followed the stories, but created our own terrors. My players were challenged and were really inventive in finding ways to survive. The game was brutal, but the players always felt accomplished when they befriended feral halflings, encountered a sage-like thrikreen, or spent several sessions creating an oasis as a sanctuary for outcasts. I look fondly back to those days of finding ways to bring Brom's images to life.

It is interesting to me that when people talk about Dark Sun, they tend to say that it is "not a setting about being a hero who saves the world" and instead just "survives the day"....almost all of the modules ever released for Dark Sun are a story about the PCs being heros by saving a city, saving the world, or saving a character who is a force of good in the world.

1. Freedom and Road to Urik are about saving the city of Tyr, and Marauders of Nibenay is about saving the city of Nibenay. In that adventure, they even gain recognition from King Nibenay himself.
2. Arcane Shadows is about saving an avangion so it can continue to be a force of good (and ideally save the world one day)
3. Dragon's Crown and Merchant House of Amketch is pretty much about saving the world. True, the world won't be destroyed if the players fail, but the way of life for everyone on the planet would change drasitcally. So the PCs are essentially saving the world as they know it. The threat in both modules is some force that is trying to take psionics away from the people.
5. In Black Spine and City by the Silt Sea the players more literally save the world from a force that would raid and pillage the entire planet if allowed. Gith and Dregoth.
6.Valley of Dust and Fire is not really an adventure itself, but spends many pages talking about how you could run an adventure in the area of Athas it presents...and it goes so far as to talk about what would happen if the players DO manage to kill the apex predator of the entire planet and gives suggestions for such a scenario.
7. Forest Maker and Black Flames are basically both about stopping Alabach-Re from gaining significant power; enough to disrupt the status quo of the world, changing it forever.

That all said, I do agree that Dark Sun is about just surviving the day and not being a hero. That is very much how the Boxed Set presents the setting, and the boxed set is, in my and many others opinions, the best version of the setting. So perhaps a more truthful thing to say is that the boxed set presents a world that is just about surviving, but the adventure modules take the setting in the direction of being a hero.
Hell, even the adventure that comes with the boxed set is about being a hero to the people of the village of Kled. Sure the players have their own reasons to find the druid and save the oasis (they need water too) but the village of Kled even rewards the players with a magical weapon (made of steel!).

Recently played a 5e conversion of Dark Sun....at first it seemed kind of alien to me but once I realized what it offered, I went full Mad Max with it and had one of the most memorable 24 session campaign ever! Great vid!

Dark Sun in 2nd Edition was my first D&D setting. I played Dark Sun for a year or so before I ever got to play "regular" D&D. This experience influenced my thinking in regards to how I look at D&D as more of a game engine rather than being a game in and of itself.

Para-elemental planes of Rain, Lava/Magma, Silt, and Sun. Rain is even weaker than water (not in a mechanics sense, but in a lore sense due to the lack of rain on Athas... though Rain Clerics are so rare because you have to pray when your element is present in order to get your spells) and the strongest out of the bunch is Sun.

Automatic thumbs up for Dark Sun. Read the first line of books. We gad the campaign set, but didn't get to use it too much. Such great twists on the use of elves, thri-kreen and others, as well as new ideas with Muls, Magic, etc. Really deserves a revival with OSR rules.

You do the best deep dives on games and their history out of everyone I've seen on YouTube, and this is one I've been waiting for. My favorite setting ever, and very interesting behind the scenes as well.
