Well, I didn't find the story I was looking for on the BNSF sub north of Bakersfield, so I just caught some trains instead! It wasn't terribly busy, so I also tossed in an interesting find on the California High Speed Rail north of Shafter. Enjoy!

September 6, 1979, I began my time with the Santa Fe at Richmond, CA on the Valley Division. I was the rod man on the 3 man survey crew for the new TOFC yard (mostly trailers). Our crew was assigned to the Coast Lines, Grand Division (everywhere West of Isleta and Belen, NM). Everywhere outside the City Of Commerce, CA, our home office, we were on "full expenses", with a company vehicle to carry 3 of us, a hoard of survey equipment, luggage, and supplies. We were on call 24/7 for assigned work plus anything else that came up (or off the track). In 3-1/2 months, I was promoted, again on full expenses, same territory, same HQ, different job for the next 2 years. That time really flew by.
