i enjoy their music as someone who's been going through their music / but god this is why i don't interact with fandoms all that much. i honestly couldn't care less about someone disliking what i enjoy, its my taste. it's subjective like art has always been.
I would actually somewhat push back on this. Not because this argument is wrong per se (in fact I definitely agree with it), but because its implications are also incorrect and problematic. One of the cornerstones of the later era death grips albums is their relationship to their fandom, especially on Bottomless Pit and Year of the Snitch. Your argument correctly diagnoses the mindlessness of the death grips fanbase, but puts the band's music on a pedestal that they don't want it to be on. The whole point of "trash" is that death grips perceives their own music as discarded waste (in both a literal and figurative sense) and no better than their own fanbase, and the song "eh" is meant to depict Ride's indifference to the success of the project. Death Grips doesn't matter to Death Grips as much as it matters to us; putting their music across as "amazing and mind-bending", while true, also goes against the fact that their music is intentionally low-fidelity (they have said they make music as if they had no resources and were in the "third world"). The fact that their fanbase is so low-effort and "trashy" is, imo, the point, because death grips' whole catalogue has been (at least in part) to interrogate the boundary between the sacred and discarded.
6:50 YOU'RE SO RIGHT FOR CALLING THIS OUT!!! I'm so sick of people seeing something genuinely emotional and creative and unique and all they do is laugh at the creator saying they're either mentally ill or on drugs just because this fool of a consumer is so deeply ironic and self conscious about themselves they can't admit that creativity is something that can't be normal just because they themselves are barely sentient husks who wear human flesh and pretend to be human
Moral of the story: Don't make your fans wait 7 years for a new album, this is what they become, it happened with Carti, it happened with Rocky and it happened with Death Grips
Your hate for the fandom is… completely valid. I am a hardcore fan of the band, but I respect them for what they are. Yes, the memes truly make me hate the community too, but I still believe that there are DG fans out there that are noided but still in a healthy mind (like me). Anyways TikTok is bad, you won’t always find the best people on there, but yeah, valid.
the death grips community is almost like ultrakills fandom because of these exact things 1. they are both annoying 2. they are most likely on the spectrum (autism, aspergers etc) 3. they are in very common queer spaces 4. they represent what the media is like (aggressive, harsh, fast pase, and so on)
i think the reason why people think you’re lying when you say you hate death grips is because you go out of your way to say it. no normal person puts this much energy into hating on something. i’m not saying it’s not okay to hate death grips because obviously everyone has the right to listen to whatever the hell they want but holy shit man, you are obsessed. you post about them more than some fans
If an artist has any redeeming artistic qualities that make them stand out, they will have a fanbase that waters every detail down into insufferable, satirical humor and refuses to see it otherwise
This is the sheep mentality that exists at the nexus of fandom and meme culture. It attracts weak willed and creatively bankrupt individuals who seek relevance and community, but their relevance is merely borrowed from the genuinely creative force at the center of the fandom, and the community only serves as a support system to sooth their ego against the supposed opponents of the fandom. A perpetual motion machine made of insufferable dorks.
To be honest, I’ve never listened to Death Grips, but I can understand why as you mentioned so many of their "fans" are so weird; the band’s aesthetic is somewhat edgy and complex, which leads listeners to develop an inflated ego just for being "Death Grips fans.", That happens in any band, though I suppose that for those that are somewhat unique and then go mainstream, the original message gets a bit distorted. Cool editing i enjoyed every second of it
Death Grips are one of the most unique band I listened to, their aggressive sound and MC Ride’s rough vocals always attracted me. I’ve always enjoyed music like Death Grips’s music. It’s unique, it’s raw, it’s harsh. Many of my top 10 tracks of all time come from albums like The Powers That B and Government Plates. I think most of their stuff is really good, the community brings it down and thats a bummer. Anyways, great video and great editing as always.
