1. Follow traffic patterns.
How people will move in the room, through doors, pathways to outside doors, etc.
2. Once traffic patterns are established find the “zones of comfort” that are inside the traffic patterns (traffic patterns act as borders to these areas)
3. Decide what the room will be used for (different purposes, etc).
4. Decide on a focal point.
5. Consider foreground, middle ground, and background.
6. Your mood is based on what you co finally look at it. (I don’t want to see my dirty dishes all the time)
7. Wrong scale furniture (36 inches for walking space around). The furniture needs to be big enough to anchor the space, but easy to navigate.
8. Seats floating with no support- coffee table acts like a “fireplace” of sorts.

My house was built in 1923. It seems to have been a professional (middle-class) neighborhood. One thing I'm finding is that the house is built so that the pathways and functions are really built in: there are rarely any choices to make about where things belong. (Part of that is due to all the windows!) But the down side is that living in 2026 is rather different than living in 1922 was. I'm still trying to figure out how to make it all work after living here for 4 years, but part of that is that I don't have money to pour into the process. I'll get there. :)

I saw your video last week and it makes me realize what was off with my tv-sofa area. Sunday with my husband, we change their orientation and it's game changer! Moving through the living room to the kitchen became more pleasant and I feel like even the aura, the vibe is better, more relaxed!
Thank you for your video! ❤

I do enjoy your videos but id love more ideas on small homes, like British house or flat sizes. I have a one bed 1950s flat and there's little space so need help on how to style and furnish based on a real person, who has items, has lots of craft materials, needs dining and living in a real small space. Add to that im disabled and have to get around with a walker to get around. Im having to completely rethink how my home is laid out while combating a small floor plan ❤

I like listening to your calm presentation, brilliant and helpful. The film projector, rather than a large TV, is intriguing. I have a large, beautiful living room and appreciate your principles. BTW, my home has a linen closet, and I regret letting go of my dedicated pantry.

5:00 doing an ad for a projector with a huge window with thin white curtain at 90 degrees is diabolical for a "do this, don't do that" video

Thanks for all the ideas!

I know all those tips but still love your videos and I watch them while having breakfast. The inserted photos as well are always amazing examples: I watch it for them too!

Great video as always, Reynard! A lot of people who feel that they need to put their furniture against walls don’t realize they can still “float” their furniture slightly off the walls, so I’m so glad you mentioned leaving space behind a sofa.

Love your videos! Also particularly appreciated the projector promo as I’m trying to set up something similar 😊

Thank you, brilliant explanations again.

I placed a foldable panel divider up behind my sectional to push the eye to the right and the rug ties it to the floor. That wasn't exactly on purpose but it shifted that impulse to want to cut through the living room 😅

Edited to add: The divider looks like a fence but has "things" comparable to horizontal blinds. It works!

I love how a television looks on a wall.

Can you do some videos on smaller homes

@BaR.8888 6 months ago

Thank you for recognizing that technology can be an anchor in a room without destroying the look and function. Most decorators ignore this aspect when it really takes up a lot of most people's lives. I don't know many people who don't have or watch a screen of some sort or another. A home staged for selling without acknowledging this feels odd to me.

Great work showing how a screen and projector can work in a space.

The modern apartments have a very minimalistic style, and it often seems like people don’t own anything except for a few decorations on the shelves. But in reality, it looks quite different. I’m struggling to place a bookshelf in a small living room without making it feel too heavy or making the room seem even smaller—like an elephant in the room. I really enjoy your videos—could you make one about the best techniques for planning and placing a bookshelf?
