The TF109 is definitely very high up on my list of favourite cars and liveries. I wonder what would have came of the Toyota team if they had stayed in F1.

Finally, albeit briefly, someone talks about the outwash front wings. That was the key according to both Brawn and Toyota engineers. No wonder the Red Bull didn't suddenly lap the field when it got its own double diffuser; they already had the most important piece in the car. But it isn't as sexy as a loophole, so alas the double diffuser magic keeps being regurgitated

I wonder how many of the engineers (and stuff in general) of Toyota's abandoned F1 project were moved to its LMP1 one and how many of them found jobs in other teams.

$3mln per day for car and engine development, that's what they were spending at the end!
Williams had a fraction of that and Rosberg finished ahead of all Toyota drivers.
I remember reading a brochure for the services Cologne was offering for the wider motorsport industry in 2010 or 11. I had to ask the engineers if there was anything useful for our junior single-seaters. Many of the machines Toyota were offering for rent were unknown, they had all the latest models of everything and probably had machines designed by order. This Cologne facility was sooooo advanced!
They had focused on 2010 car when they saw the many rule changes & Brawn being so much in front. That 2010 car was very likely a winning car! It's such a shame this car never raced, 2010 would have been crazy competitive season!

Without the Toyota way, they would have surely won championships.

Regarding the double diffuser concept, I'd heard the Honda/Brawn idea came from a young Japanese designer who had simply read the rulebook in that way.

As a result of him working in a second language, it was interpreted differently to the way European designers did, so could potentially be that Toyota designers did the same thing?

I think the livery of this Toyota was awesome and one of the best. I think the front nose of it can be improved but can't think of any thing else and overall I think it was an awesome car which just did the job and I don't remember it ever breaking down.

One of the other stories about Toyota developing the double diffuser was that former engineers from Super Aguri were aware of the double diffuser and they joined Williams and Toyota, sharing their knowledge.

I loved those chonky front tires in 2009, it looked rubbish when they addressed the balance for 2010 by making them narrower - I would have made the rears bigger instead!

I was hoping for the story about how the TF110 was on the verge of being bought and run by a new entrant....  maybe you'll get back to that

The TF109 definitely had the capacity to win races, the team just wasn't able to take full advantage. At Spa, Trulli started P2 alongside Fisichella and was fuelled heavier, but he got caught up in one of the various lap 1 incidents and the chance was gone. I question if Toyota sufficiently understood how to extract the maximum out of the car across one race, for example Glock set the fastest lap at Valencia... en route to finishing P14

Toyota has always been an enigma to me in F1. They were there for a while, but I feel like they were very much under the radar for a works team. I'd love to learn more about the history and the cars

Awesome car and livery! Honestly, I would've loved to see Toyota enjoy more success in F1. Hopefully, they can progressively gain more influence at Haas and, in the end, make it their works team. Talking about the TF109, I read that the unraced TF110 was the car in which the team had higher expectations...

The tire testing was done only with parts that where avalabele form the 09 season. a guy from toyota  told the story about it in a team fnt video.

I can't help but imagine that they could have had a world-beating 2010 season with K.K. and Kaz Nakajima. At the same time, I could see a world where their 2010 car was a complete miss and a lower midfield car. I suppose we'll never know, and that makes me sad for some reason.

If ever a car summed up Toyota’s wasted potential and underachievement despite it’s large budget, it’s this final offering. I still remember being baffled at how badly they fumbled Bahrain 2009 with their awful strategy that day. And just to sum up the cars wild inconsistency, they went from locking out the front row of the grid in Bahrain to locking out the back row just 2 races later in Monaco

Toyota always seemed to get shafted by last minute engine regulation changes; first with the banning of anything other than 10 cylinders when they already had a V12 in the works due for the 2001 season, and then here in 2009 where the FIA lowered the rev limit last minute. Makes you wonder what could've been possible without those hurdles.
