The final 100 days of the Second World War in Europe are among the most destructive in German history. Beginning on January 28, 1945, Allied armies are already closing in from east and west. The Red Army overruns German defense lines in East Prussia and Upper Silesia, while millions of civilians flee toward the Baltic coast. In the west, American and British troops push toward the Rhine. The Nazi regime knows the war is lost, but continues to demand total resistance. The result is fanaticism, flight, mass death and collapse.
This final episode of Countdown to Surrender - The Last 100 Days tells the story of Germany’s last descent into ruin. Soviet troops reach Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the first footage of the liberated death camp is filmed. The refugee ship Wilhelm Gustloff sinks in the Baltic Sea after being hit by Soviet torpedoes, killing more than 9,000 people. Allied air raids devastate Berlin and Dresden, while Nazi propaganda pushes fantasies of heroic resistance through Kolberg, the Volkssturm, Hitler Youth fighters and the myth of Werewolf guerrillas. Hitler withdraws into his bunker, issues the Nero Decree and orders the destruction of Germany’s infrastructure. Concentration camp prisoners are forced onto death marches, opponents of the regime such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer are executed, and cities become battlefields from Cologne and Remagen to Seelow Heights and Berlin. On April 30, 1945, Hitler commits suicide. On May 8, 1945, Germany signs its unconditional surrender. This is the story of the last rebellion of a murderous regime, and the terrible price paid before liberation could begin.
