🎤 MUGS REACTS TO:
Dave — Black
Live at the BRIT Awards 2020
I had never seen somebody deliver a performance like this—rapping directly from the piano while addressing Black identity, lost history, racism, family, prison, equality and reparations.
The part that hit me hardest was the question of lineage.
Why are Black people so often identified only by a color while many other groups can trace their identity to a nation, homeland or ancestry? For so many of us, history is taught as though it begins with slavery, while everything before that has to be searched for, reconstructed or rediscovered.
Dave did not approach “Black” like a simple anthem. He explored the beauty, pain, responsibility, confusion and political reality attached to the identity. This was the kind of direct, meaningful and controversial rap that made me stop the performance and think beyond the bars.
