Lucy Beats Up Henry's Fake Mugger | 50 First Dates (2004). 50 First Dates (2004) features one of the movie's funniest physical-comedy sequences when Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) and his best friend Ula (Rob Schneider) stage a fake mugging on the road to get Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore) to stop and talk to Henry. Henry pretends to be attacked while Ula plays the role of the mugger, expecting Lucy to come to his rescue. The plan works—but Lucy is far more prepared than either of them expects. She grabs a baseball bat and aggressively attacks the fake mugger, turning Henry's carefully planned romantic trick into hilarious chaos. This memorable Lucy saves Henry with a baseball bat scene is one of the most recognizable comedy moments from 50 First Dates.
Directed by Peter Segal and written by George Wing, 50 First Dates is a romantic comedy set on Oahu, Hawaii, following marine-life veterinarian Henry Roth, a man who avoids serious relationships until he meets local art teacher Lucy Whitmore. After discovering that Lucy has anterograde amnesia and cannot retain new memories from one day to the next, Henry creates increasingly creative ways to meet her and make her fall in love with him again. His friends Ula, Alexa and Ten-Second Tom become part of his unusual plans, while Lucy's protective family—her father Marlin Whitmore (Blake Clark) and brother Doug Whitmore (Sean Astin)—try to protect her from emotional confusion. The movie combines romance, comedy, Hawaii adventure, slapstick, friendship, family drama and memorable Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore scenes.
The baseball-bat sequence is especially interesting because it was part of the movie's expanded physical-comedy approach. Director Peter Segal explained that the earlier version of the screenplay contained many more café scenes and that Adam Sandler's rewrites helped open the story up with new outdoor sequences, including the penguin decoy and Lucy saving Henry with a baseball bat. Sandler also helped move the story from its original Seattle setting to Hawaii, giving the finished film its distinctive tropical locations and visual identity. Much of the movie was filmed around Kaneohe, Kaʻaʻawa, Waimānalo, Honolulu and Kualoa Ranch, making Hawaii an important part of the movie's appeal.
