Does Star Trek's USS Enterprise Design Make Sense?

Adam Savage’s Tested

We welcome to the cave designer and illustrator Matt Cushman, the artist behind some of our favorite science fiction cutaway illustrations from Star Trek and Star Wars. Matt shares with Adam his new massive cross-section poster of the original USS Enterprise, sized as large as the original 11-foot filming model. We scrutinize the details of this incredible piece and learn all the ways Matt made sense of the interior layout based on what was shown in the original series episodes!

I don’t have an 11 foot wall, but I would love to have a high res digital version to zoom in on and wander around.

To reverse engineer a fictional object from video and loose plans WITHOUT a site walk around is epic! Love you bro, Scotty would be proud 💯

If I had this as a kid in the 1960s, I would have committed it to memory and never left my bedroom. Now I'm 69. The show helped inspire my curiosities in science and my career in engineering. Some kids never grow up. Thanks Adam for a bite of geek candy.

Adam really is the best kinda host you can ask for, he genuinely loves what he's seeing and is infinitely curious about everything. 10/10 guy.

Too many people forget that the word 'artwork' has the word 'work' in it. That's a lot of work. Proper job.

Few things in life are as satisfying as a good cutaway drawing.

Okay... someone make us an interactive web version that we can zoom in to every room and see all of the details! As an illustrator myself, this is INSANELY COOL!!!

I clicked out of curiosity and stayed because it was awesome.

The first poster my late wife got me after we met was a cutaway of the 1701 A. It's still on our bedroom wall.

he did that in vectors???? Mad props brother. That's insanely impressive.

As someone just old enough to have watched the original series air (I'm 65), and who then watched the 79 episodes every day after school for years (at five shows a week, that means they repeated after just 16 weeks), Star Trek is etched into my soul. As a kid, I tried to envision how the ship was structured, and would have wanted to, I don't know, EAT this poster, I would have been so into it.

I'm a friend of Franz Joseph's daughter and was there when the Tech Manual and Ship's Plans were made. We have to remember what was available at the time. He used film clips, pictures taken off the TV and the book The Making of Star Trek. For example, on page 171, it says that the Engineering Division headquarters is at the rear of the saucer section, so Franz Joseph put it there. I do prefer it in the Engineering Hull, though.

As a confirmed Star Trek lover, this is just mind-bogglingly cool!!

From an architect perspective this is one of the most incredible things featured on the channel.

They’re tons of incredible details to admire for many hours, usually this kind of sections and perspectives are completely 3d modeled, then sectioned and finally placed as a flat shot. So the fact it was made completely as a single draft on illustrator it’s an incredible thing.

Ps, i would love to see those blueprints!!

Saying the alloy that makes the ships structure red is such a cool and magical idea and makes so much sense i love that!

I was an old school graphic artist/illustrator and later a draftsman (by hand) in Aerospace, and transitioned to one of the first graphic computers in 1985 eventually to AutoCad, absolute respect for this piece of art. Most people don't realize the talent and skill involved in a work like this ... Bravo! I can appreciate putting little jokes in our bigger projects, nobody in charge ever saw them.

What a fantastic work is this. I am now 45 years old, but I became an electronics engineer working on lithography proto machines because of Star Trek; This series really formed me as an engineer and as a person! Don't know if anybody will read this, but to all; Live long and Prosper my friends!
