BEFORE “IN THE BEGINNING” | What Existed Before Creation?
What existed before existence itself?
The Torah opens with the famous words, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). But Jewish tradition asks an extraordinary question: What preceded the beginning?
In this Daily Aliyah teaching, Rabbi Mordecai Griffin explores Genesis chapter 1 through the lens of Jewish thought and examines the profound realities associated with the world before Creation—including God, Torah, teshuvah (repentance), and Messiah.
From there, we move into the order of Creation itself and discover how the opening chapter of Genesis establishes foundational principles that lead us into the Torah, the mitzvot, and the entire Law of Moses.
This class is also an introduction to some of the basic principles of Judaism: Who is God? What is Torah? What is mankind’s purpose? Why does teshuvah matter? What is the role of Messiah? And how does Genesis provide the foundation for understanding everything that follows?
