Why do I sail alone?
I love women....and women are awful.
Women at sea are always unhappy, and women love to share their feelings.  (So, you will be unhappy too.)
Better to have your girl fly to France, go shopping, and have her meet you when you land with her looking amazing in her new summer dress and cute shoes.
Your girlfriend will be at her peak happiness after successful shopping in France.
This makes them quite enjoyable to be around.

For solo passages...
Make a three-to-four-day trip along the coast to get your sea legs.  Bring some backup if you can.
If there are complications, you can abort on day four and recover.
Once, I managed to get food poisoning the day I left port.  (Leftover clam chowder soup).
I was able to RTB before the passage really began.

The key to safe solo travel is having a transponder that constantly transmits your ID, course, and speed.
That data will be received by the massive ships speeding around you and they will use that information to avoid you.
Slightly altering the prop speed on one of their screws will alter the massive ships course.  They will miss you by a kilometer or more.
They need to get your transponder information as early as possible to make this work.

You will get a radio call from an exhausted watch commander on the ship telling you not to alter course or speed.  They will never rely on you doing something to protect their ship.  They will take charge and change course.
After a while, you will fall back to sleep in seconds after they pass behind you.  
I have a hydrophone.  I like to listen to whales and big ships that sound very far away.  After a while, you can guess pretty accurately how far away they are.  Hearing a large ship near you will instantly wake you up 100% .
When you wake up in the morning, look at the radio traffic message history and add the passes to your ship's logbook.  Coffee and safety check first.

If you are sailing the northern crossing, you will encounter many ships passing from the northeast US to Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.  This will become old hat.  
Keep an eye out for the time.  If they have a shift change at the top of the hour, the new guy may not know that you are there.
Tired people coming off watch often forget to tell the new guy everything that's happening.  
You might get a panicked call from someone who is playing catch-up because you magically appeared ahead of him at the beginning of their shift, before their first bucket of coffee fully takes effect.
I should really copyright that "bucket of coffee" thing.  So true.

I'm 68 y.o. way too old to sail by myself. This summer, im looking for a 1st mate and an engineer.

One of the first and is also very important is:
Know your boat.
Not only do you have to know where everything is but also, and this is very important, know what the function is with all your equipment.
If you don't really know what that piece of equipment is for, then how are you going to be able to rely on it when Mother Nature slaps you in the face with a wet reality.

i have used the two chain hook method in combination with the stb. Halyard winch on the mast to raise an anchor , it does work if slow and hard work . this was with  10mm chain and a 35 pound cqr.

Get yourself a decent jump pack for around 100 pounds,  this can be VERY useful if you are having troubles with dodgy batteries  / Alternator fails etc

lead whatever course correction lines back to the cock pit bulkhead - again v useful you can adjust the vane gear from down below from the companion way steps

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for making this video. You’re no nonsense way of presenting the information without drama or ego is an incredibly rare thing. Keep doing what you do, and I’ll keep watching.

Be very careful of that delusion it  happen to me . Alone is to be vulnerable. Dont deceive yourself. Lady Luck is fickle ! I have sailed alone and had a few really sweaty moments .

This is most of the questions I’ve had about how you actually do this stuff solo. Very interesting. Big things I always wonder is ok so there’s people who travel across oceans alone. It’s evidently possible but how specifically?

Do you have it sailing almost always even while you sleep?

Do you sleep for 8 hours while it sails and then man it for the day and then do that again?

How often are you just letting it do its thing without your input or are you micromanaging every 20 minutes for a month straight until you get to land?

Is “autopilot” effective enough to provide hours of no directional input required from you? Minutes? Days?

How much power usage day to day across a month voyage is possible with the renewable energy collection of wind and solar? As in, can you use a laptop connected via satellite and drawing power from its wall charger for hours everyday? Or would you best refrain from ever bringing the laptop at all for those creature comforts?
