In this HFY sci-fi story, a shuttle crash strands an alien survival instructor and his students overnight in worsening mountain weather. Then he discovers the Human student asleep.
Their shuttle isn't going anywhere.
The pilot is injured.
The electrical system can't be trusted.
Bad weather means rescue probably won't arrive until morning.
So survival instructor Tovrak Esh puts everyone to work.
Shelter.
Water.
Equipment.
Emergency routes.
Weather monitoring.
Winnie Vennick does everything she's assigned.
Then she checks who's on watch, crawls behind the windbreak, wraps herself in a thermal cover…
and goes to sleep.
Tovrak is furious.
They're in an emergency.
Conditions could change.
They may need to relocate.
There is always something else that could be checked.
Winnie's answer is simple:
“Wake me.”
She isn't ignoring the danger.
She's planning for something Tovrak hasn't considered yet.
Because Winnie has worked overnight emergencies before.
She knows what starts happening around three in the morning when everyone has been awake, stressed, cold, and trying to be useful for too long.
And this emergency is nowhere near over.
