A poet who suffered polio as a child. A legend in the 1970s in the UK.

Unreal unawareness of a poetic genius.

this went over your head tbh, Ian was a much respected person.

One of the tightest bands ever. Dury was a force of lyrical nature.

Whooshhh........... That's the sound of it going over your head.

That is drury’s voice and couldn’t imagine anyone doing it any other way

Much British music is WASTED on Americans.

'Lyrics don't deliver', oh dear what a miss. One of Britain's greatest poets.

" There aint half been some clever bastards " by Ian Dury is a must

Ian Dury was a hugely talented, popular and respected performer in the UK. He came relatively late to musical performance having been an Art teacher previously. I think because back in the 70's we Brits were exposed to a very wide variety of music through radio and TV that we are perhaps a little more open to his like. His album 'New boots and Panties' is a classic, although lyrically it is very 'English' English and probably wouldn't translate well across the pond. Cheers

It was a UK number one in 1979, he had other hits/well known songs here-sex & drugs & rock & roll, what a waste, I want to be straight & reasons to be cheerful part 3-which was later used in the Alpen cereal advert as reasons to eat Alpen 123. His career took off when punk & new wave hit in 1976/1977 & his lyrics were very much tongue in cheek. Sadly he contracted Polio as a child his left side became paralysed withering his arm & leg, & had to wear metal callipers the rest of his life. He wrote & released a song called spasticus autisticus, railing against the 'year of international disabled people' in 1981, which he found demeaning. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1996 & passed away in 2000, aged just 57.

Oh dear, possibly the greatest ever UK number 1

Ian Dury was a genius and like all geniuses not for everyone because it can go straight over some people who only hear a whoosh as it passes.

How can you not love this song?!! Fantastic

HIS contribution... HE wrote the music and the lyrics, Love Ian such a Poet!!!

Wow, one of the greatest songs and performances in pop-rock music history dismissed like its a discarded rag ... that takes some doing ... Congratulations ma'am, you have just won the tin ear of the year award

Shocked at this reaction.  This was a masterpiece along with reasons to be cheerful.  What I would say is, this often, the best songs take time to grow on you.  Maybe she needs to listen to it several more times and then she may realise just how good it is!

They had a number of hits in many countries

whoosh over the top

i watched your reactions during this song and i could see you smile and laugh as it went along, so imagine my surprise at your thoughts on the song and performance at the end, this is an absolute classic in the UK, i can only advise you to listen to more of him and maybe you might grow to like him more
