The thing that really blows my mind is that Rasputin tried to talk down Czar Nicholas from going to war over the Balkans, as it would eventually lead to world conflict. So even the crazy, mystic sex cultist could see that as a terrible idea.

When I was young and first reading about Rasputin, I was uncertain for quite some time whether he was crazy or a conman, and felt it could go either way really. Then I saw a picture and was "...no, he's batshit."

"To receive" someone in this context is to entertain them as a guest.

By "receiving a peasant", I think they mean like receiving or having a guest.

Oh, right. The poison. The poison for Rasputin, the poison chosen especially to kill Rasputin, Rasputin's poison. That poison? 21:19

I genuinely didn't know there was any mystery here, I figured they just got impatient with the poison so the shot and beat him to death and threw him in the river but his friends tried to mythologize him.

That new-ish "theory" on Rasputin's death blaming the British is likely part of a weird modern conspiracy in Russia that basically takes all the awful antisemitic conspiracies of "they control everything behind the scenes and seek to destroy us" and applies that to "Anglo-Saxons", insisting that everything conceivably bad that happens to Russia is the fault of the English.

I reckon that in his youth, Rasputin was probably an innocent choirboy. That was in the pre-beard days, of course. The moment he grew half of Epping Forest on his chin, they dropped him from the choir. Nobody could hear him as his voice kept getting lost.

@seanmcgowan7137 8 months ago

Also with the poison it might not have been as effective because wasn’t Rasputin around 6”6? He was a very big dude so maybe whatever they gave him wasn’t enough

This wonderful 30-minute presentation, yet no mention of the fact that, for most of his adult life, Rasputin refused to shower and reportedly smelled like a rancid hobo's gooch? Considering the number of weemins he was pulling, I've always found that to be an intriguing part of his story. Guy somehow figured out a way to min-max his charisma stat to the point of dispelling all repulsion toward him. Pretty wild.

So the whole Rapsutin story can be summed up as: a selfish peasant left his family (probably to starve without a working man in the house). All so he could gallivant around the world and become very good at being charismatic, cold reading and being a conman. He hid all of this under the guise of being a holy man with special powers. Got lucky with Alexei's illness which of course bought the allegiance of the parents. He then spent his time in total debauchery, living the high life for as long as possible. Then he was murdered. The End.
