I'm sorry about the camera being out of focus - I forgot to turn off product presentation and it decided to focus on the book. 👌🏻

I read this brick of a novel a few years ago and enjoyed it very much.  There is a similar novel “The Mysteries of London “, by George Reynolds, also huge.

I haven't read these books, but this video was so entertaining and even funny, with Emmelie being dissatisfied with the main character😄
Thank you for the book review!

At least the cover looks fun and will look good in your bookshelf lol 👍

Thank you for the summary. I've been curious about it since seeing the reference to it in Kerouac's On the Road.

Hello, Emmelie! ☺ I hope you're having a great day!

I'm glad you posted a book discussion! I miss these videos. 😊📖 This was a fruitful colloquy! I have never read this novel; I will add it to my physical TBR list. The storyline seems interesting.

Thank you for posting this book vlog! Happy reading! :_milady::_teatime::_gentleman:

Merci beaucoup, j'aime ca!

Going to buy it!!! Ty!!!

I can relate to this a little - some similarities (including length!) from when I read the Mysteries of Udolpo, which I did for the same reason as you- its said to have inspired Jane Austen and other writers. It was long and dramatic and a bit silly, but ultimately I'm still glad I read it. As a fan of the gothic, it's almost requireded reading! I agree about the foundations vs cathedrals idea, well said!

As a side note, I just finished Note Dame! I loved it. Took the whole month of Sept to read it, a few pages per day. It was fantastic but I am not sure if I'd have read it without your inspiration, so thank you for the push!

Emmelie, first of all, you look gorgeous wearing this beautiful blouse. You let me curious about this book. Thank you for the review. ❤😊

your description reminded me very much of Carlos Ruiz Zafón's Shadow of the Wind. And I had the same reaction to this book as you do. While it's appreciated and recommended by many, here in Catalonia, it didn't work for me for the same reason The Mysteries of Paris didn't work for you.

I read this behemoth a few months ago. If any book would benefit from an abridgement, it's this one. IMO it's an interesting  literary artifact, but that's about the best thing I can say. And the level of casual violence is disturbing, even if factually based. I'd certainly recommend Les Miserables over MoP any day.

When this came to a close, especially after your notes about how tall it is and how much narrower the margins on the sides are, I said out loud,"Noooo." As in no, I shan't be touching this book. That much mediocrity for such a long stretch of pages, sounds like a perfectly horrid time. I enjoyed your review or, borderline roast. Poe's thoughts were engaging as well, I'm glad you found and included them. It's always good to hear from you.

I hope you don't mind my asking,  but I've noticed that in some of your previous videos there are little coloured strips of paper that seem to be serving as bookmarks. I've never seen them for sale in bookshops of stationers.
