America’s most prolific master. At least one film every year for more than five decades. Each one a uniquely original gem.

These films are the classics of cinema and the paradox is they filled empty spaces of early evolving TV.   I was the first generation who was plopped in front of a TV to watch these films over and over... It shaped my life...

Thank you fou giving ten good movies from which to watch and learn.

3:00 rashomon
3:09 paths of glory
4:24 the discreet charm of the bourgeoise
5:54 grand illusion
7:11 citizen kane
8:32 bicycle thieves
10:02 Amarcord
11:20 wild strawberries
12:38 the 400 blows
13:57 the seventh seal

All are so wonderful, the world of cinema now lost to the home screen

Allen is brilliant in his own right because he has the ability to create really interesting and complex characters and weave them into great narratives that speak to the tragedy of the human condition and somehow make it all funny as hell. There is no one like him!

Add, 11. The 7 Samurai by Kurosawa. The point is how a peasant outside the Samrai class dies in battle and is remembered by the surviving samurai as truly being one of them.❤

Interesting side note:  Woody Allen used Max Von Sydow for his movie "Hannah and Her Sisters".  MVS was also an actor in the Bergman films he cheristed, "The Seventh Seal" and "Wild Strawberries".  I'm sure both of them spent time discussing Bergman.  I think an interview with Allen could help document this missing gap.

I believe in Woody Allen. As a creative genius and as a man.

Bicycle Thieves hit me hard. His number one pick reminded me of his movie Love and Death

I'm 70 and I am a Woody Allen film and 3 book aficionado.  My taste in film is broader and includes many great films for one reason or another.
Mine-(often music/sound play a major role)
Metropolis,
The Cameraman,
Three on a Match
Tales of Hoffman or the Red Shoes  (Tales-opera in English, technicolor wonders)

Duck Soup
Unfaithfully Yours,
In a Lonely Place (Bruckner’s 5th Sym theme)
Sweet Smell of Success
Lifeboat

Difficult to choose from several hundred favorite full length films, 100s of short films.
Of Woody Allen choices, Citizen Kane and Paths of Glory fit into my favorites.  The others are just as appealing yet I've seen them all in my youth along with 100s of other European movies at the Nuart theater in West Los Angeles.  The above movies as well as other 100s of favorites I desire to see again and again, much like my 61,100 LPs, CDs and 78s wherein I disposed of over 25,000 to date as they did not meet my own criteria, to desire to hear them at least 3 times annually, out they went.  So would movies like the Seventh Seal and Wild Strawberries, once was enough and I've seen many Fellini and Bergman films.  Give me a Preston Sturges, Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, Fritz Lang film anytime.  Pre-code movies with quick and articulate dialog and film noir films for intellectual and emotional attachment.

Midnight in Paris was excellent. Manhattan, Annie Hall, and Love and Death were my favorite Allen films. Personal life aside, Woody Allen was a brilliant writer, director and great actor. He's truly a great one!

With the exception of Paths to Glory I've seen, but not studied, all the movies Woody mentioned and was blown away by them each at first viewing. Some day I may watch them again and look a little more closely to more fully get what the writers and directors were trying to say. Some day.

Fellini's La Strada and Gahan's La Vie En Rose stick out in my mind in the course of my own life because both to me were very personal. They made me weep and tear at my heart like no other films I've seen in this life their meaning relentless and deep inside me, perhaps much in the same way Woody's listed movies have affected him. Of course, there are countless others one could mention if time permitted, but time won't permit me at this moment I'm sorry to say.

Woody is an awesome man someone whose humor I remember cracking up at from his first comedy films in the 60s to his latter more serious ones from the 70s on. I have to say his taste in humor and realism mirror my own to some degree but surpass my own in depth. I think he gets what life is about better than I do. Salud, Mr. Allen, Mr. Movie maker. Thank you for sharing your POV on these movie gems.

Sadly I haven’t seen most of these films but Paths of Glory, Bicycle Thieves are exceptional, but I am aware of all of them and their place and importance  in cinema history. An outstanding list.

I have not seen most of these foreign films but Path's of Glory is a brilliantly written, and acted film.

Wait, seeing #4 on his list was mind-blowing... didn't he notoriously criticize that exact director back in the 70s?

I like his early funny movies

Bicycle thieves was a great movie

Rashomon is my favorite of these, though I have not seen them all.

Arguably, the best films in history. We know Woody Allen "remade" Bergman in Interiors and Fellini in Memories. Up to Annah and her sisters he was great. Then he started to repeat himself way too much. Brilliant sometimes but only occasionally. I wont speak of his personal life because too many people already chimed in. Now, as a friend told me once, all great works of art in the end talk abbout morals. And every single one of these films are about that. Maybe he was searching for something he missed? Something that eluded him?
