Sanath Jayasuriya produced a spectacular 107 off 114 balls, but India answered with a brilliant team batting performance to chase down Sri Lanka's huge total in Dambulla!
Jayasuriya became the oldest player to score an ODI century, reaching the milestone in his 40th year. He carried Sri Lanka's innings almost single-handedly, while the rest of the Sri Lankan batting lineup struggled to maintain the scoring rate.
Despite the slow pitch and difficult conditions, Jayasuriya displayed incredible fitness and class, smashing boundaries and running hard between the wickets. He eventually fell in the 40th over after scoring 107, leaving Sri Lanka short of the momentum they needed in the final overs.
India's chase began with controversy as Sachin Tendulkar was given out lbw, but Gautam Gambhir and Suresh Raina took control of the innings despite surviving early chances.
Both batsmen went on to score crucial half-centuries, putting India firmly in command before MS Dhoni took over.
Dhoni played a superb unbeaten innings, using intelligent placement rather than brute power against Sri Lanka's dangerous spin attack of Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis. He calmly rotated the strike, found the boundaries when needed, and remained unbeaten to guide India across the finish line.
India's disciplined bowling, brilliant middle-order batting and Dhoni's composed finishing proved too much for Sri Lanka despite Jayasuriya's magnificent century.
Watch this classic ODI thriller featuring Jayasuriya's record-breaking century, Gambhir and Raina's crucial half-centuries, and Dhoni's unbeaten finishing masterclass.
