The Rest Is Entertainment

Tim Davie has resigned as BBC Director General. Who could replace him, and what does this mean for the future of UK broadcasting, public trust, and the licence-fee debate?

Is Kim Kardashian’s new drama All’s Fair really as bad as critics claim? What is with all the gloves?

Tim Davie is stepping down from his role at the top of the BBC after 5 years. What are the power struggles, political pressures, and internal drama shaking the corporation that has led to him announcing his departure, and that of CEO of News Deborah Turness? Is the BBC entering a new era of media turmoil? Will President Trump sue?

Plus, slated as “possibly the worst TV drama ever” with scathing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, Richard and Marina break down the legal-firm storyline, the over-the-top performances, and whether the show is worth watching for the drama around it's release.

I reckon when the Director General of the BBC regenerates, this time it’ll be Billie Piper

"Straight to GIF" hahaha

In Holland already Trumps attack and the resignation (agreeing to the charges) has been taken by the far right to justify attacks on our own public broadcast system (for being "too extremely left"). On the other hand, reports from the UK that Nigel Farage got more coverage by the BBC than any other politcal candidate a couple of weeks ago, did get no attention at all.

44:46 In the age of on demand tv "I'm going to have a scheduling conflict for all the rest of the episodes of this show" is savage😂

god bless marina for the argentine-west germany reference. very dated but very apt

I'm not much of a writer, but it takes me way less time to write the really good stuff than the bad stuff. The good stuff just arrives, fully formed. The bad stuff I labour over to get get it to function.

The edit was not a mistake apart from the fact that they tried it on out of arrogance and got caught!

As a "factual" programme maker for BBC/ITV/C4/ C5 and US broadcasters, I must say I am astonished that this 'edit' got through to transmission. It should never have happened and the people who DID it and DID allow it to be transmitted, need to pay the price. Getting rid of DG and Head of News is probably overkill, but there are heads that should roll

Re the conversation about 'All's Fair' there was a bit about executive producers and an indication that they don't actually do anything. I'm guessing out of the 16 someone does something. Could you devote some time in an episode to the titles in shows such as: Showrunner, Producer, Exec Producer etc etc. I'd be interested in how 'showrunner' got its name.

The article about the Trump legal case in Marina's own newspaper yesterday contradicts what she is saying. The case cannot be heard in a UK court as the programme was broadcast over 12 months ago. Trumps case was filed in a Florida court.

The Panorama one reminded me of the mis-edit of Alec Salmond before the Indyref.
Nobody resigned on that one.

I would like to ask Marina and Richard what kind of bookshelf they would abandon "All's Fair" on?

I just love that Richard has a one track Traitors mind

Now I live in a country where there is no BBC, I can tell you that the BBC is absoulutely worth fighting for. The fact that the standard is so high is beneficial for everyone. I have been very disappointed about their coverage about the Gender/Transgender issues- as there was no reporting, just bias. But because the BBC is accountable to the people not shareholders even with bias it is more trustworthy than every other news organisation out there.

It's wierd how the BBC has a high profile scandal around November for the past few years (Huw Edwards, Greg Wallace, Panorama). It's almost like a worrying tradition at this point.

@mikerichards6065 10 months ago

Trump can't sue the BBC for libel in the UK as more than a year has passed since the programme was broadcast. And it'd be fascinating to know what reputational or financial damage he has suffered and why it took so long for the complaint to be raised. It's almost like the Telegraph and Farage have been stoking a fight.

I was watching Not Going Out with Lee Mack and found an episode I'd never seen before with you and Alexander Armstrong when Lee is on Pointless ❤ never knew this before !!

'A DRIVLING IDIOT THAT ACTUALLY BELEIVED IT" wow. I'm not even a believer and that hurt me. 😬

"They have to be held to higher standards."

Agreed Marina. I think so many of the commentators defending the BBC's actions forget that they are the national broadcaster - in a way that none of the US firms (including ABC) can lay claim to. If the defence is that the BBC is the "heart of our culture" (Richard's words), then they must try their best to be accurate.

And let's not forget that the public are mandated to fund it - on threat of imprisonment.
