🎬FILM SUMMARY 🎬
The 3DO arrived in 1993 to shake up the gaming scene, but unfortunately, the excitement behind it was short lived. There are multiple reasons why the 3DO could not succeed, even if it did kickstart the 5th generation console race. The biggest reason being the overwhelming competition on the horizon.

I still have my Panasonic 3DO and my Atari Jaguar...

3do was a super innovative and very forward thinking console for 1993 when it was released there was no comparison to it. Even today you can appreciate how sophisticated the systems technology was for the time, it's very well made and solid.

Man, the 90s console wars where just a bloodbath. Jaguar, 3D0, and my beloved Dreamcast where casualties.

The 3do is an example of what is known as media convergence. The Laseractive and CDI tried this as well. Those could be interesting potential future videos. Anyway good info there!

The marketing for the 3DO also made the system try to be appealing to an older audience, specifically by calling the Super Nintendo and Genesis "baby toys". Aside from the hefty price tag, it just came out at a poor time and quickly became overlooked by other more powerful systems that more people trusted. With that being said, it is possible to see the 3DO as the first stepping stone by the gaming industry that would eventually lead to the beloved fifth generation with the PlayStation, N64 and Saturn.

Why didn't the original Panasonic 3DO make a decent-looking controller? Did they spend all their time and money on the console design?

My friend had a 3DO. It was amazing. My favorite game I remember is Bounty Hunter.

btw heros of might and magic was a pc game, and the picture you showed for the ROBO was not the Robo but the AT&T prototype that never saw the light of day :)

@roberthornibrook6344 1 month ago

Also correction, Hereos of Might and Magic was never on the 3do, that was a PC only game until the early 2000s when it showed up on the PS2. 3do company was involved with the 3rd game though but it was long after the 3do had been discontinued.

THe 3DO has very good games on it too.. Best console version of Street Figher II, Wing Commander games, Star Control II, and many others.. Korean exclusives such as Eye Of The Typhoon and Battle Blues are also great.. Definitely one of the most challenging systems to collect for.

If it wasn’t so expensive, it would have been the system.

If only Trip Hawkins could've figured out how to get the 3DO's price down at launch it might've done slightly better. $700 was way too much to charge in the 90's for a gaming console as in 94 you could get a SEGA Genesis "With The SEGA CD and 32X", a Top Loader NES, and A SNES for the same price. That or a reasonable down payment on a PC.

Selling a platform instead of a proprietary system was an interesting move back then. If it had caught on we'd basically have a 1990's steam machine.

Another very nicely done profile on the console I lovingly saved up $750 to buy in 1995. But when I got to my game store in our mall, I suddenly spotted the all new Playstation! I must have been there at least 45 minutes trying to decide which console I wanted, as both had many of the same games, except the Playstation had "Twisted Metal," so that was my tip of the scales toward a long running popular new console!

@ruenin74 1 month ago (edited)

I bought it at launch. It had some insanely good games on it, but it wasn't the best console I ever owned, not by a long shot. Star Control II and Return Fire made the 3DO worth owning all by themselves.

At 70, the systems that you have highlighted today or in the past, are first hand familiar to me. Nostalgia is a very real thing at my age. But memory is not always as good. Seeing is believing though, thanks for the refresh.
