My engine was turning over once, stopping, then turning over again, stopping, etc.

I never realized you could use the slight movement of the intake valve immediately after it closes to gauge whether the compression release on the cam is working properly or not.  To be able to check this while doing a valve adjustment and not having to worry about a tear down is just awesome, because before seeing this, I was a bit concerned. I really appreciate you making this video.

Thanks for a good video on the easy way to adjust the valves. Two thing I’d like to add that may help
1. You need to adjust the valves before you can check to see if the compression release is working if the valves are out of adjustment you’ll never see that little movement.
2. Spend $10 and change the aluminum intake pushrod to the same steel rod as used in the exhaust .  The aluminum rods wear at the guide and snap and the ends mushroom. It’s a great way to keep from having problems why Briggs using aluminum pushrod beyond me.

Yep, that's the problem on ours. My brother bought a mower off of facebook, and we've been working on it for about a week so far. We tried everything we could, change the oil, spark plug and even the starter, because it was broken beyond repair. Yet the engine is still hard to turn over, after I've seen multiple videos on the same process, I'm going to try this tomorrow.

The best version of dealing with the valve adjustment I have seen.  A very good shade tree mechanic lesson.

Thanks for the video. I replaced the head gasket and the engine wouldn't turn over. It would move a little then stop. Your video was simple to follow and was exactly the fix I needed. I must have had the valves adjusted wrong the first go around. I could barely spin it by hand. Thanks for the checks to do prior. I went through all them- battery, starter, compression movement (had the last after the adjustment). Yea, I had to take it apart twice but it starts now. That's all that matters. 👍🏻

Great video!  Saved me hours of work going after the problem on the camshaft.  Adjusted the valves and the engine runs fine.

thank you my man!! my lawnmower has not started that easy in 4-5 years !! its a 20-22 year old lt1000 with a 17.5 hp motor. this job took less than 30 min. easily. for anyone wanting to do this, 3/8 socket for valve cover, and for the 2 back bolts on plastic cover over flywheel.to many people post comments that OVER think shit!!!! this works perfectly!! top dead center blah blah blah THIS WORKS!!! JUST TRY IT AND YOU WILL SEE!
