the cuts from Retail to My Little Pony are diabolical. Kill shot.

I think Nobbel made the point about WoW's current narrative quality very succinctly when he asked "Why is this 40 year old war veteran acting like a teenage boy" in relation to Arathor's seemingly circular character arc.

This is one the things I am most fearful of for Forever.  I think you hit the nail on the head

I like how Raid Shadow Legends ad is in the 'Terrible' bookmark of this video

It’s weird. It’s like the leader characters are completely disconnected from the actual peoples they lead.

My guilty pleasure is watching long form essays on why Exactly modern games and writing suck.
Thank you for your contribution.

All of the voicelines from Darion, Alexandros, Tirion Fordring, and The Lich King at The Battle for Lights Hope Chapel go soo hard...i miss that warcraft writing.

"We will take the fight to Arthas, and we will tear down the walls of Icecrown! THE ARGENT CRUSADE COMES FOR YOU ARTHAS!"

You did an incredible job summing up the vibes here. I started with "Oh this is gonna be an hour long clickbaiter..." and yet, you had me gripped every minute through. Really, genuinely good job. Subscription well earned.

Separating out "writing" or prose away from the overall story or lore or direction is important. You can have a good story and solid lore, but absolutely butcher the prose in such a way that nobody wants to care about your story. Or, you can have a very nothing story that's hard-carried by its eloquent, prosaic writing. In video games, you want to have naturally epic, moving or at the very least quotable lines. I don't much rate Fire Emblem Awakening's story in the second half, but my GOODNESS does it have some good lines anyway despite that. "You deserved more from me than one sword and a world full of problems" is a bit wordy, but is still a lot of people's favorite line from the series. The dialogue between Chrom and Lucina in general tends to be quite good, and imo that's the reason people love those characters and thus why the game burns into the memory so positively for so many people.

The simplicity of "No king rules forever" from WotLK instantly makes it iconic prose, and someone like myself who has never played WoW still gets chills hearing it.

Back half my life ago in AP English Literature, I hated most of the books we read because at the time I was focused on the story and not on the prose. Now, looking back, the prose is THE reason why those books are considered "great American classics" and are studied in US high schools. Or at least were, I have no idea what high schools are teaching today.

I think another part of why alot of the cinematics looks off aswell, is that every character has has their skin smoothed over with a thick layer of "never-frown". They all so bubbly and cutesy, so whenever they do anything serious it falls completely flat on its face.
"now look shocked" and then its the most exaggerated face the models can handle without deforming completely while asking saying "GASP, I am shocked". Its like they are scared to take themselves seriously, and so we lack any kind of grit

15:38 im so glad to finally hear someone mention this issue. It bothered me for years how slow paced all WoW cutscenes are, and i almost felt like its just me issue at this point

Another issue I have with contemporary WoW writing is that, for example, the logic according to which elves and trolls shouldn't fight simply because they share ancestry.
Like, what the fuck? Most factions (trolls very much included) don't seem to have many issues in killing people of their own species, let alone those that look and talk different, come on...

HR was in the room when the midnight script was written lol

What drives me nuts about WoW dialogue is how most of it is not actual conversation, it's people saying a bunch of super-serious and very slow one-liners.

The only time I was really invested in Midnight Story was when Alonsus Faol was in it for a brief moment.

The writing felt more adult (Even when it's guiding the forty year old man child that is Arator) and him trying to guide someone that has lost complete faith in not just themselves but the path they had decided to tread. He himself questioning if making the Paladin Order was a mistake or not as he reached a greater understanding felt far more human and relatable then whatever the hell the melodrama of the vast majority of the game suffers.

I want more writing like that rather then "express your feelings every 2 steps of the way incase someone isn't reading the quest text".

i bet they stopped caring about end of raid cinematics because they know everyone is skipping them to see what dropped from the last boss.

The horde and alliance feel like the on again off again main couple in a sitcom that didn't expect to last 2 years but is somehow going on 20 and they need to keep finding reasons for them to fight then get back together

One of the big problems with "unfier" characters with a series like WoW is it turns into "totally not colonialism guys" as you run out of internal people to unify, and you start discovering other "missing" peoples who need to "learn of the benefits" of unification... as you kill all the "evil leaders" who disagree with your worldview, and installing unifiers.

And for Blizzard who have made it clear that they totally hate colonialism...well they must really hate their writing... or they don't know a thing about the IRL buzzwords they're throwing around.

The Horde and Alliance could face significant political turmoil, have to balance the independence of their members and their members wants and needs against the bigger picture...but that would require Blizzard to actually know shit about the races in their own game, and it takes away from how cool "not arthas" #42, and "not thanos" #8 is and their "totally not some entirely other franchise's story" #3's amazing and unique plot.

Thanks for your vids brother; always fun to think about what you have to say.
