It's been a while! Where are you at with your WIP?
If you'd like my help with your novel: https://julianmaylett.com/mentorship

This is certainly an interesting topic. I'll admit, I've always found it strange how themes need to be watered down/obscured in order to be palatable. If you've got something to say, you can't be too forthcoming about it or it turns people off. It's supposed to be entertainment, I get it, but it's still a frustrating part of the craft.

I'll hype this because it's so good. If your characters don't do these things, your book is flat.

Wow I haven't seen anyone discuss this topic in this way before!! Love how you discover new angles to story telling 🧡

You’re back!

Another great lesson, Julian. Thank you. Where am I in my WIP? I'm nearly done outlining. I've added your Pillars to my tool set. It fits in well with the "Inside Outline" framework and the Story Genius method for getting the story core and the scene structure right. I've used your workbooks to create pillars for all the main characters. Doing so deepens my understanding of each of their choices and values and mistakes. The antagonists need a story arc too. You're doing great work here and I'm grateful.

BTW, thank you for mentioning JK Rowling's name. Most youtubers who use Harry Potter in their analyses won't say her name. They disagree with her politically, so resolve their moral and psychological conflict by avoiding acknowledging that the "wizarding world" was invented by one creative and incredibly wise writer. She writes detective novels now, and I find them even more masterful than what she wrote for children.

Love that this popped up. One Q and it goes back to a comment I made on a previous video - multi-POV novels, while the moral and psychological needs are universal (their fixations and individual behaviours adjust) do they all go through this? For example they all have their own "choice moment" or one for the main protagonist is enough?

Love this whole series. Thank you for the content.

Hey Julian, do you ever do manuscript evaluations?

Nice video as usual, but the slight background Music you usually have is a lowkey a noticeable absence haha

Hey, I was curious if you have any type of story pillar setup for the arcs of side characters? They don’t go through all the same as the MC but having some sort of beat structure, using your story pillars, would help me quite a bit. I would prefer not to mix another story structure concept on top of the story pillars.

I'm due a rewatch of P1 😅  Q1: How long do I keep pressing on the moral and psychological complications? Q2: What would the psychological need be if the moral need are your examples The examples felt similar to mine

I'm happy to see another video. But this video gave me a sad realization.

An important thought/opinion that other writers might share...
One thing I wish creators would stop doing though is reading AI scripts. It makes it difficult to follow some of the concepts because I can hear the AI language and sentence structure in what you're saying. I would much rather hear you explain the concepts in your own words. It's becoming discouraging to hear how creators are reading AI scripts or sharing AI posts when AI language is not the same way we speak to each other as people. I think your channel would be more popular if you did. A lot of people also don't support AI in the use of writing novels (myself included), so it would be better... I'm discouraged to realize this novel structure you developed might be heavily influenced by AI, since I want my writing to be free of AI influence and I didn't realize this until now.

Finally new video 😂
