Twenty-five years ago, Gillian Welch released her acclaimed third album, Time (The Revelator). The album—now something of Americana myth—was recorded with Welch’s longtime musical partner David Rawlings at Nashville's Historic RCA Studio B over some months in late 2000 and early 2001.

In an unconventional move for an alt-country storyteller, Welch didn’t include liner notes with the album’s initial release. “There are a lot of words on this album, but they shouldn’t be read—just heard,” she told Billboard in 2001. “The meaning has to do with the way they sound.”

For that reason, there was no better place to record the album than Studio B, a hallowed sound space of deep historical significance. In this session, Welch and Rawlings perform two songs—both recorded at Studio B. Hear the words as they were intended.
