Your surname is a title. In Karnataka surnames were not inherited family names — they were appointments. Your ancestor was made a Gowda — village headman. Made a Hegde — coastal chief. Made a Shetty — guild merchant. And the ancient DNA finally revealed what was underneath those appointments.
Karnataka is the most genetically diverse state in India. A crossroads between Dravidian south, Indo-Aryan north, the Arabian Sea coast and the Deccan plateau — every migration that has moved through the Indian subcontinent passed through Karnataka. The surnames encode each migration differently. The DNA confirms what the surnames encode. Gowda comes from Kannada gavunda meaning village chief — carried by Vokkaliga communities in south Karnataka, Lingayat communities in north Karnataka, Kuruba pastoralists, and multiple others. Same title. Completely different genomes. The genetic study published in Gene analyzing 203 Kannada-speaking men found Vokkaliga communities dominated by L1-M76 and H haplogroups — ancient South Asian lineages with roots in the AASI population present in South India for 65,000 years. Lingayats show a broader profile with northern R1a and J2a alongside southern H and L1-M76. Approximately ten percentage points more northern ANI ancestry than Vokkaligas. The reason — Basavanna's twelfth-century Lingayat movement explicitly recruited from multiple communities including Brahmins. A religious revolution in 1150 CE left a measurable genetic mark on the Karnataka gene pool visible today in DNA tests. The Vokkaliga L1-M76 haplogroup traces directly to the Ancient Ancestral South Indian founding population — one of the oldest Y-chromosome lineages on earth, predating the Indus Valley Civilization, predating the Vedic tradition, predating any surname or title by tens of thousands of years. Karnataka Brahmins carrying Hegde, Bhat, Rao, Murthy show the highest ANI ancestry of any major Kannada community — 52 to 62 percent steppe ancestry reflecting the Indo-Aryan steppe migration. Hegde Havyaka Brahmins of the coast carry this profile. Hegde Bunt warriors of the coast carry an intermediate profile. The Bunt community — whose most famous daughter is Aishwarya Rai Bachchan — carries warrior-landowning ancestry intermediate between Brahmin and agricultural communities. Shetty from Sanskrit shreshthi meaning guild leader — the coastal traders whose commercial networks connected Karnataka to the Arabian Peninsula and East Africa — show specific Middle Eastern admixture in DNA test results consistent with centuries of Indian Ocean maritime trade. The Kodava people of Coorg — who claim descent from Greek soldiers, Arab traders, or Scythian warriors — were studied in the landmark 2025 Communications Biology paper, the most comprehensive Kodava genomic study ever conducted. Their genome is genuinely distinct from any other Karnataka community — carrying population substructure between different Kodava clans and ancestry components that do not fit the standard South Asian genetic frameworks.
