Two kinds of riders keep landing on the Street Bob: riders stepping up from a Sportster, and riders coming over from metric cruisers. They all tell us the same thing. This motorcycle is easy to ride.
Stuart takes one out for an evening ride and walks the whole bike, starting with the newest way into one: the Street Bob Solo, released this year with a solo seat, no passenger pegs, and a lower price of entry.
The easy part isn't marketing. The low centre of gravity and the mass centralization of the weight mean that once the engine is spinning, you can hold crawling speed through a parking lot without drama. Out on the road it's planted, glued to the tires, and happy to flick side to side through corners.
The engine is the second-generation Milwaukee-Eight. The new aluminum intake manifold and straighter intake runners give the air-fuel mixture a cleaner shot into the cylinder heads, so it makes more power and runs more efficiently than the first generation. It's air-cooled, with an oil cooler working around the exhaust valves to keep temperatures down.
The details riders actually notice: two wheel options, the five-spoke cast or the tubeless laced wheel, the same strong laced design Harley-Davidson runs on the Pan America. All-LED lighting. Ride modes, traction control, and ABS. A preload-adjustable rear suspension you can firm up for two-up riding and back off when you're solo. And those rubber gaiters on the retro front fork are doing a real job: they stop bugs from embedding in the fork tube and tearing a fork seal. Leave them on, or pull them for the look. Riders do both.
It's a cruiser, but you can set it up to tour. Detachable saddlebags and a detachable windshield turn it into a mile-eater with a 3.5 gallon tank good for a couple hundred kilometres between stops. Pull them off and it's a stripped-down commuter again. That range of use is the whole point of the bike.
Every day is a demo day.
