We use an even bigger chisel tip at work to be able to remove and rework Panasonic PF series relais, I think that is a little closer to the intended use case

The channel Mend It Mark does a lot of retro electronics repairs (stereos, record players, cassette decks, amplifiers, that kind of thing) and I've seen him use those wide tips for desoldering larger ICs very quickly and efficiently in spots where hot air would either be impractical or might damage components.

Spoon tips are one of my most used tips, they're very very versatile you can get some real consistent joints on PTH. But they do tend to deteriorate around the edges a bit faster than a regular tip does.

The 2 wide tips are good for de-soldering. You can reach all pins along the side of a 16 pin chip, etc. The bent spatula one looks interesting but I'd prefer it in a C245. So far I haven't found one.

Quick-change cartridges essentially allow you to fashion a custom tip out of copper in any shape you desire. You simply cut off the existing tip, drill a hole in the copper, and—if you wish—nickel-plate it for durability. The only limit is your imagination. I once made a dual-row tip for desoldering DIP chips from vintage circuit boards that might not have survived rougher removal methods; a tool like that simply isn't available on the market.

I use the 771 tips every day, it’s actually purpose built for wiring high density multipin cable connections

For that first knife tip you used, where it seemed to be at a much higher temp than set - maybe when wanting to clean pads off a high thermal mass board the higher temp is called for. It would make sense to me that this would help to melt the solder faster than the heat can conduct away through the ground plane, though there is the associated danger of damaging the board and/or nearby components with the higher heat (especially if we don't know what temp it was actually at) and it would likely reduce the cartridge lifetime. So, tradeoffs.

I swear to god you keep me sharp and updated

I have a JBc and the smaller Geeboon iron, the differences become more obvious with chunky tips, like how much power it will put into the tip and how quickly that happens. That being said the Geeboon is amazing I love it

Hey, I just got the same spoon tip and I have the mechanic version on the way. Great stuff Zach!

I always wondered the use ability of these type of tips. I don’t think I would have a use for any of them but it’s nice to know in a real world demonstration. Might pick up one or two. Your videos are always informative. thx

The conical are excellent for soldering heavy wire like 12AWG-20AWG to PCB. Gives the nice round fluffy pillows despite the thick leads. High power flashlights, drones, etc.

the wide chisel tip would be useful in my life of work when i need to remove long through hole pin connectors

Good video! I agree that the bigger tips are more valuable for desoldering. I have a C245-407 tip that I mainly use for desoldering caps on the original xbox (especially on the ground legs it can be a pain to remove caps). That way I don't need to add hot air for every cap I try to remove lol.

Cloud Strife's favorite soldering iron tip...

The 771, the one with the angle and a flat screwdriver-like tip, could be more more comfortable to use by orienting the tip upwards giving yo have a wide flat horizontal surface to de/solder shields, ports, hard to reach components... I’m thinking of tweezers with that kind of shape and how I use them 😊

Looks like the soldering iron the final boss drags around with him (resident evil giant sword guy)

i’m about to buy a good chunk of new iron tips

I like the knife tip as a hot knife cutter for paracord. I keep one with my soldering iron and tool kit in my car , so it's always around. I've also used it (a dull one) for wire stripping on critical wire, but it's not recommended.
