Everything Jose Mourinho has Gotten Wrong so Far on His Return
Jose Mourinho returned to Real Madrid because this squad needed someone who could make hard decisions without worrying about the name on the shirt. Vinicius keeps starting, Valverde and Tchouameni keep getting trusted together, Bernardo Silva waits, and Yan Diomande keeps giving Mourinho reasons to rethink the attack.
Number One - He is afraid to be the old Mourinho
The old Mourinho could be brutal with selection. Iker Casillas was Real Madrid captain and a club legend, and Mourinho still benched him. At Manchester United, Paul Pogba was the club's record signing, yet Mourinho dropped him when he wanted something different. Reputation did not guarantee ninety minutes.
This time Mourinho sounds calmer. He has spoken about being more controlled with the media, which is healthier than turning every disagreement into a public fight. But calmer does not have to mean softer with his lineup.
