hey guys! I hope you enjoy the video 🤍 I’ve started streaming again on Twitch, so if you’d like to catch the next one, here’s the link! https://twitch.tv/lavendertowne

i love how she never describes something as "weird" or "strange", every girl she draws she calls "beautiful"

it’s fascinating to notice how most ancient beauty standards for body types involve having a belly, considering how big of a beauty standard a flat stomach has become in our modern culture

The nefertiti statue being changed reminds me of when a lot of noble European paintings were painted over to better fit the standard (Mainly for women)

i think the reason they all have as you said 'soft bellies' is because it indicated access to food, aka wealth. in nigeria though i think its also because it looks like pregnancy, since the sagging breasts are also a post-pregnancy symptom, so their beauty standarts seem to have more to do with fertility body-type wise

I like how she gave them checker patterned clothing to give a better idea of how the body look like

Remember kids: you’re not ugly, the universe just placed you in the wrong century

Its crazy seeing things change throughout the years. Which is why i tell people just bc they dont match the "beauty standards" does not mean theyre unattractive bc it changes a lot

The way I screamed when you said Nigeria because most people don't really include africa in this type of thing or exposures, they mostly only include like European and Asian countries, so thx u 😭💓

Hi I’m Nigerian. Love the video
But I just wanted to say that Nigeria is a very diverse country with over 100 different culture, each with their own unique beauty standards
For example, facial scarring is only something you’ll see among northerners while that fuller figure is smth they do mainly in the south east
I know that you’re referencing different cultures and regions from west Africa but I just want ppl not to assume that all Nigerians had the same beauty standards back in the day
Thanks again, seeing my country was a surprise ngl

"they would gently smoosh the baby" NOOOOOO 😭😭😭😭

The mayan girl with the hooked nose is so beautiful, Its making me wish we had more variety in noses from fictionnal characters because it's just!! so cool!!

I can’t wait to show this to my mom. She’s Nigerian and she has a similar bodytype to the woman you drew so I think she’ll love it. Thank you Haley ❤

Honestly I'm with the Mayans on the noses -- I think large noses are GORGEOUS. I have the stereotypical Western European tiny nose and it's fine, I don't mind it, but I love larger hooked noses so much. Enough that most of my OCs end up having larger noses, usually hooked or bumped in some way, just because aesthetically I adore it. I'm also a really big fan of noses with large/flared nostrils. I think it is so pretty, especially on women <3

I want an episode two with more ancient beauty standards like Scandinavian, gauls, Arabian, ancien greece, maori, khmer, indian etc !

I have a really obvious roman nose, and I've been teased for it being big, so I often wonder if in some other time and place if it would have been beautiful. Maybe if I lived I ancient meso America lol

If I’m not mistaken (please correct me if I am) teeth blackening was seen as a status symbol, as well as symbolizing purity, because white teeth would eventually fade to yellow, but black teeth would always be black. Nobles or those who could afford it would be more commonly seen with blackened teeth, whereas the common folk didn’t often do it. I also believe black was seen as a the colour of purity during that period (again, PLEASE correct me if I’m wrong)

As a Nigerian, although I do love the design and think it’s amazing and really well researched, we are extremely diverse and these things vary a lot

In many ancient cultures, a soft/larger stomach was considered an intrinsic feminine feature, as it represented the presence and health of the womb. Fascinatingly, this shorthand was utilized by Pharaoh Akhenaten, who had themselves depicted as a unisex figure with beautitful features from both genders (including a strong face, visible womb, and endowed chest). I love art history and sociology.

Another fun thing noblewomen did in medieval Japan: shaving the eyebrows and either gluing or painting them back on much higher on the forehead. Saw someone reproduce it as a kid and got spooked, but I'm fascinated by it now.
