I am Brazilian, and eleven years ago I bought a small rural property with the goal of preserving a small patch of Atlantic Forest that borders the back of my house—a place teeming with birds like toucans and many others. The site was the original headquarters of a farm, and much of the wood in the old house is Ipê, Jacarandá, and Roxinho (purpleheart). The planter box in front of the house used to be an animal watering trough, and—believe it or not—it is made of Jacarandá. I still have about eight living Jacarandá trees, and I take very good care of them. Best regards to everyone.

Me, a guy who hasn’t touched my wood lathe in over a decade “why yes I would love to spend over an hour learning about exotic woods for potential projects”

@TwinTurboZach 11 months ago

It would have been REALLY cool if you included images of what the trees look like with these!

The interesting part of Brazilian rosewood is that sometimes I find old headboards in the streets cuz someone died and the family had no idea and throw the bed away (I live in Brazil and there’s a lot of furniture made of this wood around here).

One of them subjects the more you learn the more you realise you don’t know

Purple wood is often used in wooden boat building for it's hardness, rot resistant property and very high compression resistance.
I often use it in mast step, butt blocks, keel, and many other structural application.
it's quite heavy as well.

Dude! I have a board of Brazilian Rosewood, the most fragrant grade, sit down for this, 38"long, 12 3/4" wide 1 1/4 thick. It came to me from a friend who was tired of facing the same dilemma: it's illegal to sell, it's absolutely precious and I don't dare to cut it. My friend got it in the 1970's from an old Italian woodworker named Tom Rizuto, who was retired and spent several years holding court in his shop in Asheville, North Carolina. He didn't really want to sell anything, but if you hung around listening to his stories long enough, you could talk him into letting go of something. Except for his prized possessions, a collection of 6 life sized wooden statues of Popes from history. I hope those are in a museum somewhere. Anyway I have made a base for my rosewood plank and it serves as my bedside table. I am thinking of leaving it to a young friend who is a luthier. Let him worry over it for a few more decades.😂

The dumpster at any old house/building renovation has some of the most beautiful old growth wood that just goes to waste

As a forestry student, I absolutely love learning about woods and their unique structures.

Seeing these large premium wood trees in the wild whenever we do field research makes me excited because of how rare they are.

I am 72. I inherited a small pile of exotic woods from an old Italian furniture maker when he died 20 years ago. I retired in 2020 and used them cut up and arranged in a pattern for 3 panels used as a backsplash in my kitchen so everyday I can look at and remember the history of each piece.

I'm in Tasmania, I have a few pieces of Tiger Myrtle, some Huon Pine salvaged from antique furniture, and Blackheart Sassafrass with insane spalting. I have 4 Huon Pine trees growing on my property that I planted. In around 600 years, someone is going to make bank on them.

Honestly, the most interesting part of the entire video, to me, was that the rarity of some of these woods was so extreme that Matt had to stop to lay out some moral guardrails for their use. It really drives home how deeply regarded and valued wood and trees can actually be.

@AndrewHall-h5m 11 months ago

I’ve got a gorgeous piece of pine in my workshop. It’s not big enough to make anything with but it’s certainly a flex when someone enters my workshop. That and my Black and decker drill.

10:41 Making a box out of jarrah is truly a stroke of irony because well… most military personnel’s medal boxes are made of it.

@Batosai11489 11 months ago

You do a really good job leading from one wood to the next. This was true in the last video as well. Most would just do a disconnected listing.

When you mentioned the chopsticks you made from Zitan and how you actually use and appreciate them, it reminded me of my own set of chopsticks with hand carved dragons on the handles, probably not any type of special wood, but special to me. For years, I kept them stored away, afraid of ruining them. Then someone told me that was a waste, that I should actually enjoy them. That was over 20 years ago. Now they're worn, but not ruined, and I've gotten so much joy from using and appreciating them all this time.

Matt, whatever that farting noise is at 0:15…. I nearly die laughing. Especially the recent wood video. Excellently executed

@theREALsingleman1 11 months ago

i had absolutely no interest in wood before this video, but your enthusiasm is INCREDIBLY contagious. i put this on to fall asleep to thinking "how can this guy stretch wood to an hour haha", fought off slumber for half the video, and went back to watch the other half this morning. i can't tell if it's the wood i find interesting or if it's your hands-on and experienced way of communicating wood, but i'll definitely stick around to find out. lovely vid

My dad, now long deceased, trained as a cabinet maker in Italy in the 1930's before emigrating to Australia post war. I used to love sourcing exotic timbers for him to make various pieces of furniture, all of which I still possess in my late 60's. My most prized piece, however, is an Indian rosewood jewellery box, made with timber barely 6mm thick, with handcut dovetails and french polished to a mirror finish. The lid has a thin strip of sapwood on one side. That piece was made with a very limited set of machine tools, but never once did he complain of difficulty working the piece which he did largely by hand.
