Thank you for this! I am reading Anna Karenina for the first time now. I love the farming sections and Levins pov. Im just starting part 3 and in love with it. These characters are interesting and Im excited to continue the journey with them.
This was so interesting! It definitely made me want to reread the book, since I fell in love with it back in high school but haven’t read it since. ☺️❤
I think this video was made for me 😅 I loved seeing Levin write about agriculture and the chapter where he mows the grass with the serfs is one of my favourite chapters of anything ever.
Thank you for your answer to my question. This is much appreciated.
I enjoyed Anna Karenina. Being an Orthodox Christian myself, my favorite portion of the book was the wedding of Levin and Kitty. IMO there are few things in this world more beautiful than the Orthodox wedding ceremony. The crowning of bride and groom is unique to Orthodoxy, and many times Orthodox Christians are actually buried with their wedding crown when they repose.
Again, thank you for taking time to respond. Blessings. 🙏
Levin's development & storyline, and the farming class aspect of the novel was my absolute favourite part of the novel, by far. Perhaps that's male perspective? On the flip side, I found it interesting that Tolstoy was the first writer capable making me think so convincingly from a female perspective. Particularly in Kitty. Incredible.
I forget, have you read A People's Tragedy: The Russian Revolution: 1891-1924 by Orlando Figes? I specifically remember the long section regarding the lifestyle of peasants and the views of them from the outside (and the use of their image for politicized ends) being one of the most fascinating parts of the book. It made reading the segment you describe in Anna Karenina all the more insightful. Levin's meditative sowing, its swaying prose—I truly love it. I hope you are well. It's great to see you posting again; you're a phenomenal teacher of these works. Looking forward to your thoughts on Russian Modernism!
