OTR Food & History

Of all the durians sold on the global market, half come from one small province in eastern Thailand- and it's harvest season. Today on OTR we're taking a road trip to Chanthaburi to explore the durian supply chain. To understand the world's most controversial fruit and to try it- straight from the farm, from the processing factories, and the kitchens of the region's durian masters.

Location pins (apologies, none for the packaging factory; it's not open to the public anyway, and I also forgot to pin it, since we found it by just walking along the highway somewhere)

Thai durian is different from other durians in other countries because Malaysians and Indonesians eat durians that are ripe and have fallen from the tree, which is soft and has a strong smell. However, Thais prefer to eat durians that are called "crispy outside, soft inside", which must be picked from the tree before it falls.
Malaysians will say that Thais eat unripe durians.
But Thais will say that Malaysians eat mushy durians.
Which is a different taste preference.

We made annual treks to Chanthaburi until I physically could not endure the trip from Bangkok. Our favorite activity was the Durian Buffet at a Farm. We now freeze durian so we can have it all year round. I first encountered Durian in 1969 and continue to love it.

I live in Rayong, Thailand, right next to a huge fried durian market. I didn't think I would learn anything new from this video, but I was wrong. Thank you for your hard work in research this.

Honestly the smell of Durian has been so hyped that I was actually disappointed when I first tried, it's not that strong
Then again I'm french and many foreigners don't really appreciate our strongest cheeses either.

16:21 I know people working at Isuzu in Chanthaburi, they said that the sale of pickup trucks always come after Durian season, if the season went well, they sell more trucks, if it's not good, they sell less truck. So it's true that Durian is main money maker there.

Safety Caution: You need a hard hat walking underneath Durian trees. Be careful. Safety first.

A little language note here. When Mr. Nu talked about fried Durian, he mentioned ทุเรียนแก่ (Tu-rian-gae) that is used to make the chips. In the context of fruit แก่ (gae) refers to the stage just before it ripens.

The next video should do Jackfruit. They also cook young jackfruit in northern Thailand. :p

Back in my childhood we have a small durian farm right across a military outpost. Every night we have to stand guard against army personnels who tried to pick ripe durian that falls from the tree. 😂😂😂

NICE; My wife just picked up a Durian grown in Chanthaburi today! There was a feeding frenzy outside the Big C south of Chiang Mai where Durian were sold below the usual price per Kilo.

Chanthaburi is the largest producer. But others like Rayong and Chumphon are also big producers. Don't forget to eat durian while you are driving through Rayong on the way to Chanthaburi. There are many farms in Rayong that hold tastings. Ours is the best!
