Welcome back to the workshop! Today, we are kicking off an incredible 2-part restoration series on a magnificent English Victorian Burl Walnut Davenport desk, circa 1870.This beautiful writing desk is packed with hidden drawers and elegant features, but it has arrived at the workshop in a very bad way. The premium burl veneer on the main writing slope is badly damaged, the bottom crossbanding is missing massive sections, and the top brass gallery features deep, lumpy ridges from a botched historical repair that will need surgical attention. However, what makes this piece truly extraordinary is the original 19th-century cabinetmaker's eye. When selecting the walnut burl, they spotted a distinct animal shape in the grain and book-matched the panels right on the upper front section to reveal a spectacular, spooky Bat’s Face complete with a pug nose and horns!Join me in Part 1 as we undertake a sympathetic, expert restoration:• The Ghostly Veneer Breakdown: Exploring the dark, Gothic elegance of the book-matched bat face panel.• Stripping & Prep: Carefully removing the tired, degraded old finish to reveal the beautifully light, faded original tones of the Victorian walnut.• The "Dinosaur" Timber Splicing: Executing precision veneer repairs using genuine 150-year-old salvaged walnut from my personal stash. Watch as I carefully select a piece of repair timber that carries its own hidden secret—a pattern that looks exactly like a prehistoric bird or dinosaur!"Years of light and wear just cannot be faked." Our mission is to undo decades of damage while protecting the irreplaceable 150-year-old history embedded in this timber. If you love traditional hand tools, historical hidden-drawer furniture, and satisfying antique transformations, please hit Subscribe, leave a comment with your thoughts, and join the journey as we revive the golden past!Find more of my restoration work here:👉 youtube.com#AntiqueRestoration #Woodworking #TheGoldenPast #BurlWalnut #DavenportDesk #FurnitureRepair #VeneerSplicing #GothicAesthetic #TraditionalCrafts #satisfyingasmr
