'Differently abled' makes me feel worse than disabled , though it is technically true. When a neurotypical calls me that , it just sounds like "I think you're mentally ill , but am trying to be nice". My dad used to say "You did not fall , you just landed gracefully" when I fell off my bike. That's what 'differently abled' sounds like to me. I fell. I am disabled. Just say it!

My friend got told by one of his teachers a few years back that "he isn't autistic because he's asian" and "asian parents would never put up with a kid like that" I didn't even know what to say to defend him in that moment. I live in the USA btw

Anyone who thinks autism is a tragedy and/or thinks someone being disabled makes them less than someone else, they should be ashamed.

Edit: i am editing this. Yes having autism sucks, after a while i see how so many of my struggles are because of it. However, i will always resent anyone who pities me and others for it. (Like "oh you wretched creature that must be so awful". People who look at us like we are something to be put out of its misery.)

As someone who is extremely close with a person who has a disability I have learned from a young  age a lot about the community, but this does not mean i know more about the people with disabilities and I highly respect if people don’t want to use disabled. But people shouldn’t be acting like they know everything about autistic/ disabled people unless they know first hand what it’s like

I’m using this as a safe space for my special interests. Olms are neotenic salamanders (like axolotls!) that live in caves in europe, specifically germany. not much is known about them as they haven’t been kept in captivity for long but they’re a keystone species meaning that their extinction or endangerment would be horrific for the ecosystems there. if one were to hypothetically keep one in captivity then i would say to keep it in a several hundred gallon tank that’s well chilled and kept in a dark room. they get to be about a foot long and usually have no eyes. the exception to this would be black olms which live closer to the surface and have eyesight as well as less adept smell and touch sensors. olms reach maturity by age 14ish and live to be over 100. they’re often compared to the axolotl, which is another neotenic salamander that lives at the bottom of a system of lakes in mexico. unfortunately axolotls are extinct in the wild, and due to the domestic population being crossed with tiger salamanders it’s too risky to release any into the wild. both axolotls and olms have gills that look like fluffy antenna on their heads. they also both live in dark, cold, oxygenated, environments. axolotls are noticeably plumper than olms and have rounder heads. axolotls also only get to about a foot in length but reach maturity at 6 months to a year old. axolotls can live as long as 20 years. if anyone wants to hear more, please let me know as i could ramble about these little slimy dudes for days :)

I'm autistic (and visually impaired) differently abled is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. It just feels like something able bodied people came up with to feel better about themselves.

I like the word disabled because it makes it sound more real (what it totally is) also I like using the word sick and compare my problems to physical problems because people understand that better like for example you don't ask a person with a broken leg to run a mile why ask an autistic person than to make a project with only very vague instructions sadly it doesn't always work but sometimes it helps people understand

I have professionally diagnosed adhd, sensory processing disorder, anxiety, and depression. my parents are certain that I also have ocd. tbh I wouldn’t be terribly surprised if I had an attachment disorder. I tried to bring up the possibility that I’m autistic to my parents, but my mom says that she’s known me all my life and she doesn’t think so. her evidence is that I experience empathy and don’t collect empty chip bags. and according to a webinar she took recently, the lockdown is causing previously “normal” people to start showing signs of autism due to stress. I tried to explain to her that this is actually undiagnosed autistic folks getting to unmask for the first time in years and that getting info from actual autistic adults is important. she just said that while yes, autistic people should be listened to, doctors have a unique perspective and they’re professionals (she said a bunch of other stuff that amounted to “doctors know more about autistic folks than autistic folks do”). she’s still avoiding giving me a clear answer as to whether I can get tested for autism, btw
